Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Are you saying that the new notebook generation are more stable than the previous ones or should we expecting similar issues? Like most of us, I don't want to spend anymore time and money for unreliable products.

If you are saying that the 2012,13 and 14 models are failing please provide a link.

This thread is for 2011 MBP logic board issues, go start your own thread on the correct subject.

I think anyone concerned should suggest to Apple via their feedback that the board software is lacking the facility to not only add points upon points on a single discussion thread for being helpful, but also offer the capability to take points away from those who aren't being helpful either. That would be great for my points tally, pretty disastrous for others though

Axeler brought up failures in other models, I responded, you jumped up and down like a child.

The thread starter gets to award the points, others may not. If you wish to award points please start your own thread then you will be able to.

I'm having the same problem as described above. I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (AMD Radeon HD 6490M) and it isn't capable of booting the OS anymore. It stucks at a grey screen. I tried different solutions while rebooting (cmd+R, holding shift, etc.) with the famous blue screen as an outcome. I'm amazed Apple stille hasn't provided an anwser to this thread.

I think I'll go ahead and suggest that soon.

I fix Mac's and PC's for a living - but in my spare time I help people out for free, mostly on macrumors when I get a chance to.  For years and years with zero points, a thank you is more than enough for my needs. As I am a late 2011 owner and also advise my clients who own them where to go to get them repaired how I see fit (I have no wish to become an agent for any reballer - busy enough as it is plus I don't need the extra paperwork and turnover on the business for a tiny profit on top so I refer only period)  I think I'm perfectly entitled to post my comments about a machine I own and work on and if the board software wants to give me points I'll take em for what they are worth - nothing!

It's a shame that those who have no wish to help when they don't even own the product concerned have to troll all over this thread for nothing but their own warped sense of satisfaction - with seemingly the moderators turning a blind eye to them riling up those users with broken 2011's with 'witty' ripostes.

Very sad really to even have to send feedback or even send an email to Mr Cook about it - shouldn't be even necessary.

I'm fully aware of that - and also for someone who gets awarded points from starters in hundreds of threads and more you should hang your head in shame for your behaviour on this thread.  You aren't helping Apple one bit with these 2011 15/17's - I'd say you're doing the absolute opposite.

Points are not awarded by 'the board' they are awarded by the poster who started the thread. They are awarded (5 points) for a helpful answer or (10 points) for a solution. Only the posters who start their own threads may award points to those who solve, or help to solve their problem.

Letting any random passer by award points makes little sense but you can suggest it.

A non-random passer-by who doesn't even own the affected MacBook Pro model and prefers to wind up the users who are already annoyed about it as an apt description of your behaviour.

I have an unfinished draft email to be sent to Johnny Ive and I'll be tacking on this issue onto it when its ready to be sent, feedback is statistical as always and pretty useless for direct action.  If the moderators turn a blind eye at the moment - perhaps those in Cupertino wont.
