Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Before you send it to him, I suggest that you spell his name correctly.

Here's another early 2011 MBP user signing in.  Mine started screwing up last week, and after playing with gfxCardStatus, I can confirm that my graphics card is at fault and i can easily reproduce the problem.  Gonna take it into the Genius Bar this weekend and see what they say.

I too am an early 2011 MBP purchaser. The first time I remember my screen messing up was about 6mo ago after I started using my TV as an external monitor. Now it randomly switches to a black screen. It can be while I'm typing or changing web pages, or loading videos. I'm not sure what exactly is causing it. I can tell it's useless to go to an apple store (closest one is 2 hours away) for help b/c they appear to be in denial. It's sad that this post has been on here for over a year and still nothing is being done about it. This was my first Mac. I transitioned b/c I thought they had a superior product and stood beside it, but it's pretty clear they are simply another computer company with a fan base. Don't get me wrong, I love my mac, but I'm disappointed that they aren't fixing this issue. I had more respect for them before I found this post.

Apple seems to be paying no mind to the complaints here, so I'll tee off.

By now, the problem is obviously so widespread that to acknowledge fault would surely make headlines and tarnish the Apple brand.  Not what they want to deal with right after they've released a new iPhone.  Perhaps leaving this forum unpoliced is supposed to provide us with the false notion that our voices are being heard and that if we just reach 10 billion responses, Apple might do right by us.

    I doubt that.

I don't like to be a grouch on Facebook or other social media, but I paid too much for this computer to go ignored.  Instead of posting here, save your energy and gripes for a forum where you'll actually be heard and where, collectively, we might have the ability to bully Apple to an ethical (if calculated) position on the repair or replacement of these beautiful nonfunctioning bricks.

Same model, same f*** error... MBP 17" early 2011. I spend 2500 euros in it... I can't believe how Apple has not started a replacement program yet. A post with 565 pages of comments... Unbelieaveable.

Don't think for a minute that this forum isn't being 'policed' by the Apple hosts. Whenever a post goes up that violates the terms of agreement, that post is either edited or deleted.

So I just don't violate the agreement and advise that others do not do so as well. Yes, I've had a couple of posts deleted, so I tend to read the agreement closely and adobe by it.

If you've ever tried typing a reply out on this forum using iOS 8 Safari on the iPad you would know I have an excuse for poor spelling, punctuation and capitalisation, particularly when the quote option is activated.

Never mind a company that prides itself on engineering and precision throughout their range discounting an email mostly based on solid engineering, thermodynamic and software issues solely because I got Johnnie's name wrong.  I've called them plenty of four letter words out loud in the past besides, such as when taking a heatsink system off a CPU/GPU and it's logic board.  These 2011's by far the most of all, cos perfection between the die and heatsink like almost everywhere else in this chassis it certainly isn't. Steve Jobs favourite four letter word ending with 't' more like!

Why not just spell the name correctly?

Is spelling all you have left to jibe about easy points fisherman?  Tried using iOS 8 Safari with the quote function - nope.

My skill sets are engineering and science, I don't do novels. Perhaps you should write one  - "How I helped tarnish Apple's brand for angry users by being a wind-up merchant on the 2011 GPU thread"

I am surprised that you prefer to write a well thought out reason why spelling the name wrong should be acceptable to Apple when spelling the name correctly is so simple.

But that's your choice if you prefer it.

Being self employed and posting a reply on mobile safari in between working on an iMac doing the 10.9.5 combo update and tweaking the parallels 10 install meant I couldn't give it my utmost attention and make corrections before the time for editing expired.  Such a shame to miss out on such an important thing, it was a tough choice indeed.

But I have to work for a living instead of sniping for points looking for fresh and easy questions on these forums.

Points are awarded for solutions, not for snipes, you know this, you have achieved 15 points so you know how it works.

I should have perhaps rephrased that to 'sniped /helpful solutions to dead easy answers', apologies.

I wonder how many points I would get for setting up an iMac in a building site office with VPN to access the server, reset the iCloud keychains on 2 Macs, 2 iPhones and an iPad and then migrate a POP3 mailbox on Mavericks Mac Mail for Exchange online? That's my workday, though perhaps you could also explain why a Tomtom could take almost an hour doing map updates on a Mac Pro 3,1 8 core with 32Gb ram?

Or you could really surprise us all - by tearing down your own MBP 2011 13", polishing the heatsink plate, applying a judicious amount of thermal paste and posting your idle temperature drops before and after and for the very first time actually contribute something constructive on this thread for everyone.  A bit harder than sniping though.
