Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Yes you're right. We all know they know. I mean we need Apple to know about each and every single case with this problem. Posting on this forum is good for us giving advice for each other, but Apple won't consider it a reliable source to know how many people have this problem.

We need to report each and every single case to Apple, using the official ways, and make sure our complains reach Apple HQs.

NEW INFORMATION FOR PUSHING THIS ISSUE TOWARD A RECALL

As nachoE noted above, this forum unfortunately does not get Apple's attention. After going through several people both in-store and online, I was told by an Applecare Representative Advisor that he has heard of this issue from a few cases. However, the engineering team are the ones that need to issue a recall for him to do anything other than saying "bring it in and pay for replacement parts". I was told specifically that right now he has no idea if they will issue a recall or not, only that he knows the problem exists. Consequently, I was told the best way to get a recall issued is by having more people bring this to the attention of the engineering team by leaving feedback (preferably detailed than ranting) here (www.apple.com/feedback) and using the tag (Bug Report) under feedback type. Supposedly using "bug report" as a tag will get it sent straight to the engineering team.

Its clear that tons of us are having this issue with 2011 Macbook Pros and as each day passes more and more are experiencing it. Due to all the information on these forums, the problem has also been well detailed and outlined, and further documentation is not getting it any closer to actually being addressed by Apple. Its evident that Apple needs to take responsibility for defective hardware and take action in response to overwhelming concern. If not, they risk showing sheer negligence not only in this individual product but also in all their company service. As such, we really need to send our case reports directly to Apple via the above information, in hopes that it will lead to more a constructive avenue, rather than continue to wait in distress here.

My MBP 17 early 2011 was turned over to Apple yesterday after crashing hopefully for the last time from the known problem that Apple continues to ignore.  I brought it in to the genius bar and the woman didn't believe that it was a GPU problem and hand no knowledge of it.  Of course this problem started just as my Apple Care expired and has gotten progressively worse as of late.  I was able to crash the mac in less than 5min with the blue screen of death.  She wouldn't let me speak to the store manager, said it was fruitless(pun intended), no benefit because it was beyond 3yrs and the manager will not bend.  Very far from the apple we all knew.  This WAS probably my 15th apple computer over the past 19yrs.  Another black eye for APPLE..  $310 to have it fixed, new logic board etc..

I cannot help but think of gollum and his precious after reading all about your obsession with points there.

As for my request - it's not strange at all to an engineer wanting to get to the bottom of a problem but you honestly don't care, only getting those 10 preciouss points for being the first to answer a newbie with silly questions like why their AirPlay isn't working in iOS8 etc.

Engineering issues are out of your league son - I suggest you take your ball and fishing line elsewhere to play the genius.  There are too many imposters in stores never mind here

    Jmob,

I had the same problem- 4 months beyond applecare. Brought mine in and they issued an exception. Dropped the machine off last Thursday and got it back last night. Hopefully this new logic board will last.

Is that why you continually ask about them?

Well, got the macbook back last night and low and behold it received a new logic board and a new charger board. Have it restoring now and will report back. The drive was completely wiped and the bootcamp partition removed. Oh well. Hopefully it will last until an official recall.

Simply to prove your obsession with the precioussss - took you 8 minutes to nibble, I believe you are also English too so thats at nearly 11pm.

All adds up to me actually starting to feel sorry for you fella. You need to get out more, seriously these points are ultimately pointless.  Hopefully you will figure that all out one day..

winclone for bootcamp users is a must. Backs up the entire windows volume to a DMG and restores fast too.  I have my 2011 Windows 7 MBR patched to support AHCI mode for SATA 3 and ssd and restoring that back is a lot of effort, believe me,

    Why state the obvious?

Besides I've yet to you see you ask a rational, relavant question about the engineering problems these 2011's suffer from Gollum, so please enlighten me with a question worthy of an answer and surprise me.

I understand that these support discussions are primarily for people that have a problem and engineer types like yourself can help answer of fix the problem.  It's obvious you don't recognize this as more than just a problem/answer discussion.  With 1.4million views and approaching 10k replies, this is a problem that Apple is ignoring.  When you have thousands of MBP of the same vintage having the same problem, it's an engineering/production problem that Apple should fix.

Because I have no rational, relevant question about the engineering problems some 2011 Macs are exhibiting. Clearly it is not fixable with a patch or an update and will require intervention from Apple for a solution. Whether this will remain an individual procedure or become a mass one I have no predictions. I do not claim to be able to see the future.

I question the value of a thread which consists largely of a repetition of the same complaint or efforts to profit commercially from it, if this much effort was put in the right direction a more favorable outcome might be realised.

So the question is, why post here rather than where it would be noticed by those able to do something about it? What is the aim?

I have read this entire thread from the start and participated in it for the past year, saw these same models fail with clients and am only offering my insights fixing them with better failure rates than Apples depot boards.  I too think it's digusting that users have been hung out to dry having to pay for this, but if Apple made minor adjustments to the guidelines there would be less angry users with failed gpus on this thread. All I ask is not only do apple offer their depot program but also the right of the user to have their own gpu reballed and reimbursed also.  Hope that clears any confusion up.

    Gavin,

If I had an ounce of curiosity to WHY this wasn't manufactured correctly, I'd ask.  When I buy an Apple product, I expect it to process the task at hand, provide the power it was design for and have it last like a normal Apple product has.  When I use a spreadsheet to calculate a set of numbers and give me their variance, do I really care about the code behind the application or do I care about the program doing what it was designed to do.  Are all Scots so cynical?
