Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

So why bother participating other than annoying the heck out of angry users with tou drivel and picky points on this thread? Do you honestly think that Apple don't read this thread?  I was told about the spike in failures over a year ago from an AASP, made more enquiries as I'm curious and the whole UK apple repair industry seems to know. We are fortunate here in the UK to have the sale of goods act protecting us but don't you feel it's unfair its a  postcode lottery and others are left to pay for boards in other countries again and again?  I do.

Plus if you've read back carefully you might just figure out that I haven't just been posting about it here.  Or that I make a single penny on any reballing work - I refer every single one to an eBay link and my sole interest is my clients and my own Macbook Pro lasting as long as my other macs. These users here too.

You are welcome to believe what you choose, we'll just disagree on it.

No disrespect intended.  I merely reported what occurred yesterday and how Apple is still ignoring the problem.  Hopefully they'll recognize their wrong doing and fix the issue and pay back those who had to shell out $300+ to fix it.  Engineers like yourself are incredibly helpful but remember, you're engineers and you view the world a wee bit differently then us common folk..  Keep crackin..

    Gavin,

If I had an ounce of curiosity to WHY this wasn't manufactured correctly, I'd ask.  When I buy an Apple product, I expect it to process the task at hand, provide the power it was design for and have it last like a normal Apple product has.  When I use a spreadsheet to calculate a set of numbers and give me their variance, do I really care about the code behind the application or do I care about the program doing what it was designed to do.  Are all Scots so cynical?

A wee history lesson - the cooling system was designed for pair of chips whose die sizes were less than half, more like a third of the original with the 2008 models. Poor pasting and bad surfaces they could get away with the cooler chips, the 2010 was worse but these chips is the 2011 it's too much heat for it to handle done apples way.  The 2012 15 has an Ivy bridge nvidia pairing with about roughly the same heat as the 2010 combo.  So both generations, post and pre 2011 fail less. Better pasting and polishing improve the 2011 hugely and also the others.  I have yet to find a single Intel Macintosh I cannot improve the cooling on, only the 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 3.2 quad core xeon (I own the 8 core) which has a liquid metal thermal bond have I ever got improvments of less than 5c over their methods period. Most drop 10-15c and these 2011 including my one was 20c on CPU idle. Even the new Mac pro, the best thermal system I have yet to see in an Intel computer anywhere ever I got 8c with a faster and bigger cored xeon cpu upgrade.

I am a quarter scot so no you're not the only one.  Apples products are a masterpiece of engineering and perfection apart from one place - between the dies of their chips and their heatsinks.

Indeed fella - i actually have no doubt there are engineers at apple too who agree with me wholeheartedly too, no doubt shot down by the marketing and legal beagles sadly.  The annoying thing is getting a DIY reball with lead will not only make the board fail less often, but if there was a repair program It would save apple millions too.

But silence is golden - and the users are stuck in a postcode and location lottery to where they purchased their mbp to get it fixed for free. We in the UK are lucky. That is inherently unfair to the thousands of other users in other countries full stop.

Its not a choice regarding this hardware. It's just physics - thermodynamics with an empirical scientific method honed through taking these macs apart for years.

Fascinating, but nothing to do with our disagreement. So let's leave it there.

That part I disagree with you about is solely your choice.

I believe that your posting conduct on this thread isn't helping apple one iota.

If anyone else here agrees with this I suggest they click the like box for some empiracal data that you and the moderators can sample yourselves.

I left my MBP at the Oxmoor mall Apple shop on Saturday 20 Sept 2014 and would have had it back yesterday 24 Sept if FedEx didn't screw up.

Received today and its working perfectly.

    Total cost including tax $322

    Replaced the following parts: *

605-3059  Logic Board 2.4 GHz    Symptom  - Video Distortion

    678-0611C  Optical drive  - Read/Write Data error

632-1510  Cable Flex Optical Drive - Read/Write Data error

    * Items identified above have been exchanged by Apple for new or refurbished parts or products. .........

I don't care if they installed used parts, ..... actually I'd prefer that they install a used logic board that has been reballed.

Set a reminder to perform a stress test one week before the end of the three month warranty.

I always believed that Apple offered BEST QUALITY PRODUCTS & was fair with customers..

I have allways known they didn't/don't.

They use same components as other (pc/laptop) manufacturers.

Same production facility like most other, e.g. foxconn.

Making a unibody using it all over again saves them a lot a of money not having to re-design everytime.

Have to admit, it looks good, easy to open and close again for repairs, no comments on that, even like it.

But they soom to do this with their cooling system too...

Using the same insufficient one all over again.

CPU dies might have gotten smaller, but performance went up.

Above that, the thermal paste is applied so badly....

Not how a real "premium" company should do it.

    Still haven't figured it out....

    Is it a virus?

Oh, wait, maybe it's Eliza's son or daughter?

    That would explain a lot....
