Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

The 840 EVO has been the default large SSD I've been installing in Macs this past year. I have had no issues with them whatsover, but I always make sure the firmware is on the latest version which is EXT0BB6Q.  If you have an older release download the firmware update ISO from Samsung.  There is supposedly another firmware for the 840 EVO due out imminently but that fixes bugs in the RAPID mode which is optimally enabled on Windows using the Samsung Magician app.  Not something I've enabled on even a Windows system!

    Same problem,

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) core i7. Got blue screen and image distortion starting one week ago, my laptop crashes all the time...

Thanks Apple to take our requests in consideration.

I am also experiencing the same problem 2011 MBP pro ATI GRAPHICS DEFECT.. what makes it worse my is my last MBP was 2008 and it had the same thing tons of money spent and eventually died any way I've NEVER had a PC laptop burn a graphics card and now I'm on my second MBP when this one dies ill be going back to PC. Mac's really are underrated my faith is shattered. who would buy a laptop knowing it will break down in three years. yet theses graphic issues keep coming up almost every year and there is NEVER a replacement program offered. this has to stop the people suffering are the people that can't run out and buy a retina mac that will only probably die in another two years or so.

If you were talking to Apple directly you might post your serial number. But keep in mind that this is a user forum, and Apple themselves are not obligated to look at your post here, so if you post your serial number here it is for the rest of the world to see, not Apple. Since you have an Early 2011 it's very likely you have the problem.

When I last posted, I quoted the Apple store genius as saying that the problem was because caused by the SSD draining too much power. Since then I decided to write an email to Tim Cook (anythings worth a try :-). A few days later, I got a phone call from Apple support about the letter. They said I had miss-understood the probable cause. They said they had looked into it and talked with the local Apple store. The actual probable cause (according to Apple) is an incompatibility between the Samsung EVO 840 1Tb and the logic board on my 17" MBP. They also said they replaced the drive cable as a precaution, but it was still most likely to be an issue caused by the drive.

I brought the machine home and re-installed OS X Mavericks. It ran fine for a few days then I had a couple of display glitches and reboots. I've now swapped back to the original Apple HDD with a fresh copy of Mavericks on it and so far it's been fine.

I've also been running iStat Menus on it to watch the heat an whilst the machine does get hot, I'm not seeing any temperatures above 100 degrees on either the CPU or GPU.

I told the Apple support crew I would get back to them in a couple of weeks after I had some time to figure out if it was indeed the SSD.

Thoughts? Any idea how I can confirm if indeed the Samsung is glitching the logic board?

I'm running the EVO  840 1TB as well and by coincidence my GPU went south after recently installing that SSD. However, I'm not going to suspect the SSD right away because:

    • SSDs are supposed to consume less power/produce less heat than spinning hard drives, not more.
    • A lot of other users are reporting the problem who never installed SSDs.
    • The problem has not (yet) happened since my MacBook Pro got its logic board replaced, but I am still running the SSD.

I think it's more likely that it's a problem with the GPU or how Apple installed it.

Add me to the count of those that are affected by this issue of the discrete graphics card (Macbook Pro 15", early 2011).

The only solution that I found is to install the nice program gfxCardStatus which can force the OS to use only the integrated graphics card, that still works fine. For normal uses that's OK, but I've lost the ability to project on an external monitor and to run graphics intensive program.

I am not happy with Apple: this laptop costed me 2000€ and this is not the only problem I met: a portion of the keyboard failed immediately after the warranty expired..... moreover, I can now recall that shortly after my purchase, the graphics card was already having issues with external monitors.

One would expect much better from a premium laptop; my wife owns a Sony  VAIO since almost ten years now and it's still working fine; a bit slow maybe, but no piece of hardware failed, except a wireless switch that I could repair myself with a little bit of oil for restoring electric contacts.

If Apple won't plan a replacement, or at least a discount program for replacing these defective Macbooks, I will just buy a Lenovo machine, next time. Less fancy perhaps, but much more robust.

Have the same problem as everyone here. MBP 15 early 2011. For several days my screen was striped and ended up being permanently grey.I have used my laptop for three years. I wonder why don't they launch a replacement program when they have it for iMacs with the same problem? I hope they'll grant us the program some day. But in order to make this day closer I suggest that we create and all sign a petition on change.org. What do you think?

WEll looks like our posts have disappeared. The video cards in the 2011 iMacs are being replaced. the link they removed is listed at the bottom of this page on this forum. Strange They would remove it.

Yes, it is strange. For those of you who don't know there's a petition for MBPs 2011. Please goggle and sign it.

YEs. Strange. I just noticed the date on it. June 2014, so it's been around a few months. Why don't they own up to the problem with the MBP?

II've signed and sent feedback to apple, both. My MBP is running using the gfx download but I'm having trouble with safari more than usual. I guess it needs restarted, but I'm afraid too do that. I just put it to sleep.

    Hi to all,

Same problem here with my late 2011 macbook Pro 15" in France.

he died 2 days ago and I was wondering if some of you try to go to an Apple store by numbers trying to convince them it is a hidden defect?

Anyone in Paris with the same problem willing to go to an Apple store?

    Fred

Here is the summary of a test of power consumed by an SSD as compared to a HDD. I will link to the full test at the end of the summary.

It seems to us that most of the flash SSD vendors never really tried replacing a mechanical drive with one of their flash SSD drives, or they would have found out what we discovered. Instead, most of them are plainly lying by telling the customer about better energy efficiency and potential improvements in battery runtime. I don’t want to point at anyone in particular, as this may have happened because most people aren’t aware of the true facts. Battery runtime may improve if systems run idle, but most of the time they don’t, and this is where the good old hard drive shines brighter than before.
