Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I signed up to add my Macbook Pro to the casualty list. My GPU has started to give out after engaging in anything remotely graphics-intensive. Screen banding, glitches, artefacts, blue screens... The most expensive piece of computer equipment I've ever bought and it's defective junk after only mild usage. Shameful. To discover that thousands of others are experiencing identical issues was shocking to say the least. Apple's silence only compounds the frustration.

I will never purchase another Apple product and I will be encouraging all friends & family to avoid them.

    hello all,

Macbook pro 2011 15 inch fully loaded died on me last week same issue. Gpu went down started gray screening, horizontal lines and eventually as I took it to the apple store to have them take a look at it screen went black. The computer was on because you could hear the fans. Luckily I had 6 days left on my Applecare warranty.  The guy said he was going to send it out to Texas to have the logic board replaced free of charge. Fast forward to today, a week later... I received a call today after complaining here and there about me not being able to do work because the computers still in repair. The guy said the part to repair my macbook the 2011 macbook pro logic boards were out of stock and he had offered for me to wait till next Friday for the part to come in or replace my macbook with a 2012 or 2013 macbook pro with the same or better specs and we could ship it to you ASAP. Obviously I took up the offer and got rid of my defected piece of crap comp with a cracked clamshell anyway. My refurbished 2013 fully loaded macbook should arrive shortly.

To my conclusion, if your macbook is w/ apple for a logic board replacement you could be getting lucky like me since the part is out of stock. Best of luck to you all!!!

I don't think so, this is the longest thread from Apple discussion forum i think, they do know the problem, but i think they still can't find a solution to fix this, i gave up. Get a new one, move on.

Take a look of this hashtag around the world, everyday a new one. But did Apple say anything? https://twitter.com/hashtag/mbp2011?src=hash

hi eezacque, I tried to help you (I hope you got e-mail notice), but my completely harmless post miraculously disappeared, along with yours, without any notice sent to me... as you can see, unfortunately, this is not the place to post complains...

this twitter site does not make any effect... it would be better to create something like "Apple MBP11 Challenge" to make it more viral

Nope, I don't get email notifications. Indeed, moderators seem to delete all references to consumer rights and Apple executives. It is okay to complain, it is not okay to post info on how to tackle this issue. The wikipedia page posted earlier is probably the better place to help others out.

spent an hour on the phone with Apple Care guys... nope... they simply don't acknowledge that's a widespread issue. If I'm not satisfied, they suggest to book another appointment with the Geniuses...

    hope you're luckier that me

ok... I hope this one goes trough... when I got my first logic board replacement, I paid the same rip-off and received a refurbished board, not a new one -  this board had different serial number sticker on it (while the original serial is still written in the chip of the logic board and it shows in the about menu)... if you find the undamaged sticker with same serial id on the logic board, you can be suspicious that there was a reflow... (note: if you click "following" above you will receive e-mails for each post, including deleted ones)

    Hi gevik,

I've been in two repair stores in Amsterdam. They both know that the issue is widespread. However, while the former proposes a motherboard replacement for 700 eur, the latter says that they can fix that for 350 eur.

    Hi All,

My MBP of Early 2011 started having problems about a week ago. The Genius at the Genius bar said it is not the overheating GPU case and I should reinstall my Mac. I as a software developer for the past 18 years just stayed silent out of politeness and brought my Mac to the repair shop here in The Hague (yes that is in The Netherlands). The repair man said, it is going to cost about 600 Euro to replace the logic board.

I just started a page to collect all information regarding these issues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:MacBook_Pro_Technical_Problems Please add your facts there. Take care to use as many solid references as you can find. A pastie of the current source is here http://pastebin.com/tp42WX3z just in case the article magically disappears.

I elaborated a bit, but the article still needs work. I think it is a good idea to gather various ways to approach Apple, and the results.

Hello all of you. I join to the crew affected by this problem. This is unbelievable.

I'm from Spain. At the end of 2011 I bought my first Apple product, a Macbook Pro 15' that worked great, amazing, until two weeks ago when It started to show all of the graphic problemas you've been talking since last year. One advice, two advices and three advices. Then it didn't start anymore. Of course, I'm out of the warranty and Apple wants me to pay almost 600 euros (around 750 dollars) for a new logic board. A new logic board that could break soon again, as it has happened to a lot of people. The issue is global and it's disgusting because, in my case, I paid 1300 euros (around 1650 dollars) when I bought it. And I know that a lot of you paid more than 2000 (around 2500 dollars)...

I don't know what to do, cause I haven't sent it yet. I need my computer because I work in video, I'm a video editor and a post producer, but I don't want to pay that amount if the issue is going to come back. But I need my computer! Another thing that makes me angrier is that when I took my Macbook to the Apple Store, I told them that, if I let them my Mac to repair, I'd need they gave me all the files inside before the sent it to the factory because I was working in a project. What did they tell me? "Ok, but it's 96 euros". 96 EUROS (around 120 dollars)!! Are we crazy?? I thought that they would make it for free because my Mac had a manufacturing problem!! What did I do? I opened my Mac and I retired the HDD to use it in another computer that a friend lent me to finish the job.

Once again, I don't know what to do. It's a pity that a computer with two and a half years is in a drawer, but if I send it to repair the problem won't be solved. Ufff... Another one here that won't buy any other Apple product if this isn't solved.

"Apple told me they are routinely ignoring customer complaints on logic boards"

No one at Apple ever told you that.
