Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I just want to encourage everyone seeking to remedy this issue to request a replacement machine. Since the problem stems from a design defect, there is no fix. They can throw in logic boards until the cows come home, but the computer is still going to run excessively hot, causing its components to lose their integrity at an accelerated rate.

Demand a replacement. This is class action territory.

this repeatedly replacing of motherboards is just annoying, because then you have a computer that is very unreliable - it can happen again any time!

i had 3 replacements so far - i only did it because until now it was free from cost. but i am really angry about this policy because i need my computer for my freelance graphic-design work, and it is totally stressful if you cannot rely on your computer when you have a deadline!

but i already made my decision: i will not replace the motherboard again, because it doesn't solve the problem.

when it happens the next time, i will go for a "real" repair.

in germany for example you can get it from these guys: konsolen-junkies (de) for less than 200 euro

they even have a page on their website called "MacBook Pro 2011AMD 6750M Grafikkarten Reparatur" (because the problem is so common!)

where they describe exactly the steps - and they give 6 month guaranty

it is not only reballing, they also use a brand new gpu (with lead solder), before they clean everything because they say there is too much thermal paste…

and in german forums i read that it is sucessful

many people tried to demand a replacement

and this is what apple should do actually

but they don't - they only offer motherboards - not even for free - brazenly! (my english - i don't know…?)

class action would be the best!

but i spent so much time now on trying - with no success (only a very appreciating sounding letter from apple that doesn't help at all) -

so i will not give any more energy into this and find my own solutions (see above)

but it is important that EVERYONE reports to apple feedback sites (because they read this, but not this thread here, they only check for things that have to be deleted here…)

    and signing on change org

Sorry but that is wrong. Posters (level 2 or above) report posts for removal, then the moderators come and take a look and decide whether to remove it. If a post is unreported it is unlikely that they will ever see it.

So, how many posts did your report?

Guess I am one of the new victim... was editing pictures in iPhoto! Screen suddenly turned bluish and you can see blue lines over all the screen. Disabling drivers does not work for me. Sigh... I canceled my iPhone 6 order and no apple you are not going to get a penny from me, whether it's repair or new products! With a margin as high as Apple's, they can surely afford to take the responsibility and do what should have been done.

hi Silbe, (sorry if bother you) do you know if you got a refurbished or new board board last time and what are your max "temperature monitor" readings during the graphic load? I am bit curious to compare with temperature results on my board, which seams to be brand new one this time... I have up to 99°C GPU Proximity and 79°C GPU temp Diode during a furmark test

That board is out of production, so it will be a refurbished one.

One thing I was able to do this AM was to boot into safe mode and removed Adobe Create Cloud software.  System has been usable since I removed it.  Not sure that is anything more than dumb luck.

Just happened to me with a late 2011 Macbook Pro 17".  Screen resolution shifted to the right (left-half of the screen was on the right side, right-half on the left); could move the mouse past the right edge of my screen to get to the left.  Screen lockups started occurring.  Reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC; was eventually able to boot back into the system.  More screen lockups followed with other display artifacts.  After shutting down and waiting a bit, booted back up to blue columns shown on screen.  Would boot past the apple logo and try to go into Finder only to display a grey-bluish screen and never get into the system.  Tried booting into safe-mode only to get a black screen; never makes it into Finder.  Let it sit for a day and tried again, still the same issue and could no longer boot into the system.  Brought it to Apple and was charged $310 for a logic board replacement (includes $100 for labor).

So like everybody else, 3  after working fairly mnicely, i am starting to these graphic issues, and worsening everyday, earlier it was occasion(1 crash per day) to crashing every few minutes now. Unless apple offers a recall this is definitely my last apple product. Having recommended there products to so many friends, gifting a air to my parents as recently as january, its a real dissappointment they way apple has handled this issue till now.

Adobe's Creative Cloud has been mentioned in this thread before, it would be interesting to know just how many cases it is present in, but, I doubt that it is the cause, possibly it is a contributing factor after the initial problem and possibly it makes it more noticeable.

All of which is speculation, there are many posts with little to no information, many that conflict.

Less histrionics and more information could make this thread useful.

    Yours was useful.

This could be a contributing factor as some of Adobe's products, Photoshop included, force the AMD graphics card to be used.  A lot of people that use gfxCardStatus to force the use of their integrated graphics have had success in continuing to use a system that has exhibited the graphics issues, since the card that fails is the AMD.  Also to note, when I experienced the problem, I tried using an external display as well (this also forces the AMD card to be used), and the same graphics artifacts were pushed to the display.
