Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Chalk up another one.  My late 2011 MacBook Pro has developed the dreaded GPU issue. First started yesterday and is now occurring with increasing frequency on both the internal and external display.

I am unfortunately one more with the same issue/problem on my MacBook Pro Late 2011. It happened two days ago and now I have a great decorative piece and not a work tool.

I spent a lot of money thinking they've bought a great computer, now I have to change my mind.

How this computer is nicknamed PRO and die "naturally" two and a half years later?

Why Apple does not say a word about it ? Why Apple does not care about its customers?

I'm very disappointed , disillusioned and most of all without my work tool, all due to a manufacturing problem ...

Many of us would not have bought this unit knowing this issue!

Add me to the list.   Apple has quoted $532 to replace the logic board.   I am waiting to see what comes from the forum and law suits before deciding on what to do.   This is disgusting that a +$2,000 PC should fail in 2 years.

I'm another one.  Early 15" mbp 2011 started glitching with scan lines and offset picture last week, after a day wouldn't start up past Gray screen.  Disgusting that Apple hasn't addressed this problem.  That's $1000 per year I paid for this thing.

This is a necessary recall, its an easy fix tho, you pay $400 and they fix it for you. Disregard its only 18mo old. that doesnt matter as apple only answers to its

    share holders not its customers.

I'm so sorry to say this but Apple is waiting for us to shut up.

Why are they replacing our Logic Boards with refurbished ones? Because they have already finished their stock of "new" ones.

Are they going to produce more Logic Boards? No, there is no business there, there is no profit, They DON'T care about us, they want us to consume their products and BUY new ones.

From my experience there are four options:

    1. Temporary solutions like Reflow or Reballing.

    2. Sell your Macbook as spare parts.

    3. Keep paying Apple to replace your logic board with a refurbished one until the end of the days.

    4. Use your Macbook as a cutting board.

Thanks for your time and I'm sorry again.

I will not shut up. There's nothing I hate more than being taken for a fool for spending over $2000 for a computer that lasts a year and a half and then be ignored. I may keep being ignored by Apple, but I will make sure not to buy an Apple laptop again and not let a single individual or company in my circle get one either.

Yep, and the class action is now being covered by major news outlets including CNN.

Apple, you had your chance to do the right thing by your customers and you failed miserably.

Shouldn't have turned your back on us, Apple.

If it's the same issue we're describing here in this thread it's probably just a coincidence that you upgraded to Yosemite or perhaps during the install it heated your laptop up and it triggered the defect.  This is a hardware issue that affects early 2011 MacBook Pro's on any OS including old Snow Leopard, Mavericks, etc. -  In other words, the issue is your GPU, not your version of Mac OS.

Apple is really embarrassing itself by not acknowledging this issue and it's coming at a time when iPad sales are slowing and they are becoming more dependent upon Mac sales to take up some of the slack.

Well, Apple, this is going to hurt Macs sales.  Apple, this class action is going to hurt your brand.  Do the right thing before it's too late. Since you didn't have the dignity, ethics and respect to do it for your customers, do it for your brand before this continues to spiral for you.  Do it for your almighty stockholders at least.  Geez, I'm becoming increasingly embarrassed to say I ever was an Apple user.  Never thought I'd say this after over 20+ years of using Apple products.

APPLE, OFFER AN OFFICIAL RECALL AND REPLACEMENT PROGRAM NOW.    RIGHT NOW.

Just adding my 15" MBP 2011 to the list... was considering buying a new one, but bought a 2012 one instead. The new ones are hard to open, and i recon Apple wants us to just throw them away when they malfunction. Started with mac in the 1990's and been with them ever since. But now they are too expensive if they only last three years.

Adding my 2011 to the list.

I got apple to cover the repairs, taking it to Apple store on friday.

but here's my question, we all want our computers repaired, but if they're replacing the logic board with the same model of video card, how does that repair it? the same issue will keep happening, is there even a way to repair these models?
