Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Got the same problem here (spain). The guys from the Apple Store told me that this was a common problem from this batch of computers and that it would cost me + €550. Now, I already had to change the hard drive last year, plus this? €750 on repairs on a 2.5 years old computer that costed me €2500 That is absolutely inadmisable!!!

On Sunday night I joined this illustrious club of non-valued customers.

The graphicscard suicided while filling into a numbers sheet. Heavy 3D stuff obviously.

After 3.5 years even Apple care is of no use for me anymore.

And of course the apple service hotline told me exactly this. "Not our problem, go for a repair and leave us alone." Thank you!

I really loved my machine, even though my last MBP from 2008 died the same death, I was so happy with the system.

I could not imagine to ever use a different computer if not forced to it. But I am forced. By Apple itself.

Now, that I quickly need a new computer, I am honestly considering to switch back to Windows after 8 years.

And I don't feel so well thinking of how many people I recommended Apple products to. There are alone 7 machines that I take care of at friends and family. And there are many more who bought a Mac on my recommendation.

So what does Apple suppose me to answer next time I am asked for advice? "Yeah, go for it, but don't expect to be treated as a valued customer."?

OMG! What are you thinking ... FIX THIS... i can not believe it ... we are a lot of people... A LOT...  what are you now?..  Microsoft? ...

What are you waiting???.....  that everybody buy a new one?  ...  we will not .... believe me!

i just found this joke... "How to invest in Apple: complete guide to buying AAPL shares"

"Everyone who bought a macbook pro spent a huge premium to buy macbook pro's and did not expect to have a manufacturing defect. This issue had made a 2500$ investment a piece of junk in 2 years. We do not buy Apple products with this in mind."

I read a lot about this issue last year and completely forgot about it until this morning when my screen went blank then into those horizontal lines.

I cannot believe how widely people have been effected by this issue.

i am having similar issues on an early 2011 Macbook Pro 15". Most annoying as I have just had the logic board changed at the end of my extended AppleCare period for a fault with the SD Card reader - no problem with graphics - and now on the new board I am seeing all sorts of GPU issues from pink and white striped screens of death to generally garbled display.

The majority of our development team is working on mac book pros. 7 of them have been purchased in 2011 which of only 1 is still working. The remaining 6 started failing in the last three month. All have had the same graphic cards issue. Back in 2010, the business took the stance that they would rather equip their staff with MacBooks than HP's or Lenovo's because of the extended durability. Now this happened and as a result the management decided to replace all Mac's over time with PCs. Apple offered to replace the Motherboards at a cost of 600 Euros each which is simply not viable. This incident caused the management to revert back to PC as Apple was simply not willing to accommodate and make a move towards a loyal customer. This is very disappointing and I hope the stock loving apple management takes measures to repair a broken image as this thread and many others proof. I am still loyal to the company and recently bought a new mac book pro for personal use, but from a business stance the move back to PC makes sense if apple takes the approach of an off shelf service product with an expected life time of two to three years. A PC is simply cheaper to purchase. I hope apple finds their way back to their core values which made the company big and brought it many many customers.

Hi ...exactly the same issue here.  I have two MacBook pro 17 inch and only the early 2011 model has unreliable hardware.  Having had the logic board replaced under applecare 7 months ago it has failed AGAIN! .. This will be its third Logic board replacement  of its short 3 year life (if i decide to stay with Apple at all).

This is a 2 grand Laptop + additionally purchased AppleCare and it cannot be right that on average it has needed a new "brain" very year of its life.  This is clearly a manufacturing / design fault and Apple need to recall and replace these models ( obviously an issue for me as I can't get a new 17 Macbook pro anymore ).

I am going to try the route of getting the fault diagnosed and the expected cost .. then call Apple and see what happens.  At the very least i'm not sure how they can deny that a brand new Logic Board is faulty if it fails after 7 months from new

I Have encountered the same problem for my late 2011 15" mbp.

was quoted more than $1000sgd for a logic board replacement. Basically same greenish apple logo with horizontal lines and failure to load of OS and constart rebooting.

    "after the lawsuit was filed."

There hasn't been any lawsuit filed which has anything to do with this problem.

    Hi,

I just have replaced the chip directly from the logic board as I can't afford a 600$ bill for a new logic board. Luckily a friend of mine has a BGA machine and I could fix it quickly and chip, but let's see how long this new GPU chip will survive...

To those who have no money to repair/buy a macbook, you first should try to make a "reflow". It worked for me the first time it happened (exactly three years after buying my macbook pro). Now happened for second time and I already knew that this time I should replace the GPU from the logic board.

Anyway, I didn't pay 2.000€ three years ago to suffer such a terrible failure.

    Good luck to everybody!
