Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    "Yes there has been!"

Well, then there's no need to flog a dead horse, except emotionally.  Sign the petition, complete a questionnaire, and register with the law firm.

For many months my macbook pro was sent to repair six times under 90 day warrant. Today I visited the genius bar, a nice guy that works at genius bar listen to me. I told him "my macbook pro was repair six times and the problems keep returning sooner or later so I need a better solution".He said six times repair was a lot. So his solution was to give me brand new mid-2014 macbook pro retina, and I was so happy to settle for this solution. I am hoping apple give this solution to all of you.

SIX TIMES they did what? on all of the times they replaced the logic board? my god that you had patience and thankfully it did pay off!!

My only hope now is for this to be an isolated problem and not that 2012/13/14 models will start failing after 3 years cause that could be so sad for all of us who trusted Apple again and got a newert model.

Yep me too. Got a brand new Mid 2014 Retina, MacBook Pro 15" sat in front of me. Bought through work, so thankfully I didn't have to fork out for it myself. I'm watching an waiting to see how it performs, whilst my 2011 MacBook Pro is being repaired.

I'm getting a free repair through Currys'PC World (their Authorised Apple repair centre) - but they've almost had the machine 3 weeks - and keep ringing to say that they are still waiting for the part from Apple so it's been delayed. If I've got to go through this rigmarole multiple times before I'm offered a new machine - I'm not going to be happy!

Hi everyone. So I have a Macbook Pro OS X 10.7.5 purchased in 2011 and all of a sudden a horizontal line appeared across the center of my screen. It is different shades of blue and white and has irregular patterns. It looks like it is only 1 pixel wide. Does this fall into the same issue everyone else is having?

I'm ****** because my AppleCare just ended in September. Is there anything I can do?

For some reason my Edit button to my last post is MIA. But there is a picture of it. Pardon the fingerprints on the screen.

The weird thing is, about a week before my AppleCare expired I brought my MBP in to get fixed under AppleCare. I had to get the trackpad fixed because every once in a while when I would click, the bar would "click" but the click would not register on the computer. They fixed that fine and before that point I never had a problem with my MBP at all. Now, suddenly, this line showed up...

    Français  de France.

En réponse à ta question . Ici sur les forums Francophones , il y a énormements de problèmes identiques  et les mêmes réponses d'Apple.

My MacBook has the same issue. I cannot believe apple isn't leaving any comment about this. I'm curious about the result of the lawsuit. Especially how the outcome will affect apple to handle this issue in other countrys.

Latest victim. Genius bar confirmed the worst. Luckily I had 3 weeks left on my Apple Care program. Will definitely do some stress tests on the video driver to make sure the logic board is not simply a refurbished one from all the lemons that are out there.

    Hi!
I'm one of these "fortunate" Apple customers with a 2011 mbp. The GPU has the well-known issue since september, but suddenly a vertical line similar to what you posted, appeared on the screen only today. I don't know if there's any link or commonality between the two issues.

Since I've never read about a single faulty line in the list of possible signs of gpu failure, I had a closer look and found out that could be "stuck or dead pixels".

In my case were just stuck pixels and I fixed the line playing this video in fullscreen, for about an hour and a half: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2eQhhMvi-U

I know it seems strange, but it turns out that "stimulating" the jammed pixels in that way can solve the problem!

You speak in the past sense.

It's not "has been"  or "was" but THERE IS ONE NOW!

To update some of my problem.

I did a clean install of Yosemite OS on the problem macbook 2011.  It works for the first time the when i stated the computer. It pops up a window says the graphic card have problem.  Now, after second use,  it no longer work.  Same problem as before.

Apple, do something to save your customer.
