Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

So hopefully this pending class action suit will achieve the desired result. If it does all of you should keep diligent notes and records on what was done to your computers because at that hopeful future point those expenses will be reimbursable.

    What is the desired outcome.?

    why do you care?

I wasn't asking you, quit butting in and let people speak for themselves. Who do you think you are?

I am interested in what it is that is expected from Apple. I think it is an important point. Simply complaining is uninformative.

    YMMV

Just reball my GPU for about $62

I hope that the laptop will live up to any adequate solution

Csound1 makes a good and useful point: this is progress.

Q: What would satisfy all legitimate complainants?

For what its worth, my opinion is that an expertly-executed repair to the logicboard, backed and paid for by Apple, using high quality materials (that we all thought we'd paid a premium for in the first place) and replacing the GPU with a new part (just to be on the safe side--I've not read anything seriously suggesting a fault with the AMD per se). The repair itself to be guaranteed for more than the derisory 3 months -- which is tantamount to saying 'no, we don't trust this either': say 18 months? Some mechanism -- a software patch perhaps -- to prevent the AMD running excessively hot under load. All this to be carried out with despatch -- we are professional people and one way or another this whole debacle has cost us in time and hard cash.

That'd do it for me I think.

there's two degrees of lecture of your phrase, one is funny.

but come one, "interested in what it is that is expected from Apple", really?

everyone just ask for a decent and durable solution, nothing extraordinary considering they sold us a malfunctioning macbook pro in the first place.

my question remains, why do you care?

    can also add, what for?

and one more, why only ask one person and not everyone posting here then?

Seriously guys, i understand why tempers are short (and getting shorter) here, but this personal sniping is not germane and serves only to dilute the thread with irrelevant noise. A serious question has been posed: if a consensus can be coaxed out as to what specifically we might settle for -- rather than the amorphous drone of 'something must be done' this thread might amount to something more than 'sound and fury, signifying nothing.' We are now aware of the scale of this situation -- there is some measure of power inherent in that: time to focus... time to put an edge on what is a heavy but blunt instrument.

I have thad he same issues as everyone else on here - Early 2011 Macbook pro 15"

Have just picked it up following the fitting of a new logic board (quoted UK consumer law and had work completed for free) but within an hour of getting the computer home have had a return of a horizontal shift of the graphics ... totally fed up with the whole Apple experience!

Count me in on wanting a fix. I also signed the petition:

    https://www.change.org/p/timothy-d-cook-replace-or-fix-all-2011-macbook-pro-with -graphics-failure

A fix to me just means that my laptop would degrade gracefully from use, over a period of 10+ years, as it normally would if no manufacturing flaws were present to expedite that process. My Toshiba and Sony laptops are still going strong, and this Apple is 1/3 and 1/5 of their age... I bought an Apple product to me last longer, not shorter. Thanks for destroying my perception of a quality product and quality customer service to back it up. I'm returning to a Bill Gates or Larry Page product to take care of business until this gets resolved...

    One of Apple's biggest fans,

    Now disappointed customer,

    Josh

    nothing personal here, point918.

tempers are short, getting shorter, for sure, IF you own a mbp from early or late 2011, 15" or 17" which is not his case.

after long denying this problem was wide spread, asking for some detailed informations to only a couple of users for unknown reasons, refusing to give any, he is now pretending to suddenly be interested in what one person is expecting from Apple while acting tough when asked about his plan and/or sudden motivations are?

but you're right, when going back and forth with this dude, always ends to the same conclusion, irrelevant noise polluting the thread.

and as always, sorry to anybody receiving notifications about these useless posts.

Had you taken the time to read this thread you would find that I have consistently asked for information, I have posted 2 different questionnaires in attempt to make it easy. A few helpful posters responded, but unfortunately others were just like you.
