Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Yikes! This is really touching a nerve in this forum!

What I would expect is for Apple to do what they have done before when they addressed defects in their products.

    https://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/

For example the current problem with the bottom case::

    https://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/

"If you believe you have paid for a repair or replacement due to this issue, contact Apple regarding a refund"

In the case of the bad Sony Lithium batteries you were billed for a new battery which was sent to your credit card. Then when you returned the battery in the included box and return sticker your card was refunded. Free shipping both ways.

It takes quite a while to set up a program like this. E.G. refurbing a bunch of defective logic boards so the mass of failing boards and unhappy customers can be addressed.

Re: The problem with Dell SFF Optiplexes in the early 200xs. Dell never addressed that problem and our school had 20 failed computers.

    Hi,

    I have the same problem.

My Macbook Pro 17" early 2011, start exhibiting pink stripes on the screen and after 3 day it was unable to boot. It start the loading but don´t boot.

I have reported to apple, that problem and they just dont help me at all.

The repair cost about 600,00 € and they dont assume the issue.

    nothing personal here, point918.

tempers are short, getting shorter, for sure, IF you own a mbp from early or late 2011, 15" or 17" which is not his case.

after long denying this problem was wide spread, asking for some detailed informations to only a couple of users for unknown reasons, refusing to give any, he is now pretending to suddenly be interested in what one person is expecting from Apple while acting tough when asked about his plan and/or sudden motivations are?

Had you taken the time to read this thread you would find that I have consistently asked for information, I have posted 2 different questionnaires in attempt to make it easy. A few helpful posters responded, but unfortunately others were just like you.

following this thread since February, I never seen a questionnaire posted, maybe I missed it and I'm sure you can provide the links to confirm that but all I read from you if disrespectful remarks mostly about the TOU of the forum not being read at first and since then, random and easy darts thrown like you only can on the internet because in real life you would be getting troubles and pain.

but even so, why don't you post these questionnaires on the regular if only for new comers, then? and why haven't you mentioned those before since many people, me included, questioned the reasons of your input in this thread, like many times?

there's way to introduce yourself and present yourself, to expose your plan so people feel comfortable to work with you, especially if it's all about helping them, makes any sense?

honestly, you mentioning this only now after all the bull*** is even a bit surreal to say the least.

    but anyway.

except wanting Apple to recognize there's a real problem here, that their logic board swap as a fix is a joke and that we all need a real solution dealing with the cause of the problem, especially if they ask a lot of money from it, I don't understand what you expect people to tell you...

Being someone who needs a laptop for university, this is very aggravating. I'm currently using my Macbook with no issues, but the second I try to use an intensive program such as Illustrator or Photoshop, or even if I watch Youtube or Netflix, I start experiencing problems like the above. I did a clean reinstall of the OS (I'm using Mavericks now, but I could be using Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard, even.) and it's definitely not that.

So the only thing left is the solution everyone else is talking about. I don't know about you, but I am not ready to shell out $500+ on something that Apple should be reimbursing us for. This is far too many people having the name issue. Almost 700 pages for people complaining over their computer problems is too many people, and this should be dealt with. It's not our fault it's happening.

So until Apple is ready to offer a solution to THEIR error, I'll be getting a PC to do my work. As much as I do not like Windows, I can't spend over five hundred dollars on a possible fix to the most idiotic problem I have ever seen.

Hello, Just received my machine back from depot where they installed a "new" logic board and which was delivered back to me in a very strange unstable state. I called customer help, was instructed to reinstall os which I did 4 times, all of which failed to create a stable system and produced a 2nd very strange hardware anomaly so I called back customer help and was asked to take it to a store. I went to visit Genius Bar tonight and after testing they are sending it back to a special depot and installing another logic board plus possibly some other internal hardware according to the work estimate. Estimted Costs being paid for by Apple for both depot repairs is approximately $1000 US Dollars.

***Food for Thought, Apple could have treated Me to a week long all inclusive vacation in the Caribbean, written off and replaced the early 2011 for a new model and recycle the 2011 for about the same amount of money!   .

you're the only one acting childish over here, your arguments are poor and your defense is weak.

get yourself in the same situation as everyone here first, then you can join the club and share your experience with the rest of us.

you should stick to trying reaching level 9 in some other thread.

we will advise people to backup their data if they need to, don't worry about that, you're dispensable.

have a great day and let us have one if we can, considering our situation.

That's correct! Csound1, if you aren't even affected or can provide help you have no business here at all. There are other threads on the apple forum dealing with less serious problems. You can annoy them with your opinion.

OH MY GOD!!!!!  akamyself and Csound1... STOP BICKERING AMONGST YOURSELVES! You two are doing NOTHING to benefit this forum. If you two have a beef with each other then use email not this forum to hash out your differences. This is beginning to read like those faceless debates you see plastered all over YouTube. Honestly this crap isn't helping. Come on guys I now you two have more to contribute to this issue than your differences. So can we please stop hatin' on each other and get back to hatin' on Apple for causing all this hostility?

I was just awarded a $5,000 freelance gig. Guess what? I have to turn it down because my MBP finally bit the dust... completely. That may not seem like much money to the millionaires at Apple but right now it's huge for me. Especially this close to Christmas. But I guess I will have to re-think my plans for my 3-year-old daughter this Christmas since daddy can't do his work.

Sure would be great to be granted a replacement laptop before tomorrow. That's when I have to call my customer back and turn them down. Even after they promised me more work throughout 2015. So this is amounting to even more thousands of dollars my family will be missing out on.
