Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Hello, don't loose the gig, your hard drivE inside the MacBook is PROBABLY 100% OK. Firewire/thunderbolt target disk mode should allow you to buy an open box or refurb machine and migrate or clone your entire MacBook hard drive. A budget friendly mac mini would do if you have a monitor sitting around. IMHO

I Had overheating problems for the last 6 months with my early 2011 Macbook Pro. And this week it just died. Obviously diagnostics have shown a failing hardware, which makes it quite obvious it may be my logic board. That is a shame knowing I paid $2000 for my laptop back then. And even though it served for 3 years this problem should be pointed out, especially seeing that many people experienced the same problem with  listed models.

Nickiwi, guess your message won't stay on the forum, whatever the reason is...

luckily, it's been delivered via e-mail before being censored so your message got through.

and atomant, Nickiwi's got a point, if you have the opportunity to make $5k for a gig, you should get your hands on another computer, even faster way to get your data would be to simply take your hd off and put it in the new one.

not related to the subject of this thread but I got all these 'Last saved' button everytime I'm posting a message for the last 24 hours or so, error popup when I delete them, so the list gets bigger and bigger, anyone experiencing similar bug?

I was just awarded a $5,000 freelance gig. Guess what? I have to turn it down because my MBP finally bit the dust... completely. That may not seem like much money to the millionaires at Apple but right now it's huge for me. Especially this close to Christmas. But I guess I will have to re-think my plans for my 3-year-old daughter this Christmas since daddy can't do his work.

Sure would be great to be granted a replacement laptop before tomorrow. That's when I have to call my customer back and turn them down. Even after they promised me more work throughout 2015. So this is amounting to even more thousands of dollars my family will be missing out on.

Buy a new MBP tomorrow am, then you can either put your existing hard drive into it, or clone the old drive to the new drive. No need at all to lose the gig.

Let's see if this bit (in my next attempt) gets through - they now say my post discussed "inappropriate activities" - I have no means of knowing what that means.

It means that the moderators have decided that your post contravenes the Terms of Use and has thus been removed. Continually reposting it is hardly likely to change that attitude.

That's exactly what I would have done. I figure a positive cash flow of $4K if you bought a used machine and less with a new (refurbed)!

Thanks akamyself. I hadn't realised it would get through via email, although I see all others' posts via email - and my re-posting was also censored in exactly the same way which shows that it's almost certainly a robot over-reacting to certain "prohibited" keywords. So here goes again with the dreaded "p-word" edited, hoping it gets through properly this time and that there are no more robot-triggering keywords in it - they said it contained something they don't like to see, but all it contained was a common English word, in fact nothing “prohibited” at all. The last deletion in fact didn't contain the word, but other things that seem to have triggered them.

Then why do they react as if they were? Over-reacting to keywords and saying my posts contain something they actually do not?

For a gig like that, I would get a top-range new MacPro Pro on credit (you should be able to get a loan at a much lower rate than Apple's 10% interest!) and clone the data over, and debit the money to the gig. In the meantime I would get a new graphics chip soldered to the logic board properly then sell the machine or use it purely as a back-up. But that was presumably not your intention!

When will Apple understand that PROFESSIONALS rely on their PRO machines forPROFESSIONAL purposes? As advertised! And that real financial and other loss is involved (particularly our precious time!).

In my case - I'm on my 3rd replacement logic board, which began to fail after a week, and a lot of lost time - thank goodness I kept my 8-year-old white MacBook (admittedly beefed up to the specs of the black MacBook) as a back-up - it still works impeccably but I can't go beyond Snow Leopard on it. Without it I would have been lost.

Good luck, go for the gig!

How would I know, and please note that speculation is against the terms of use for this site. Posts get removed for that.
