Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Some seem to have the "last saved" bug, but I have not, at least so far.

Ah, just had the auto-save bug. I should have kept quiet, I no doubt provoked it!

Then why do they react as if they were?

As Apple replaced faulty iMac video cards with AMD Radeon 6970M free for up to 4 years, surely they could do likewise for us? I paid 700 € for my first replacement board, nothing for the further replacements, but this has not solved the problem - does anybody know if the iMac replacement boards solved their problems (similar symptoms to ours)?

My last attempt to get the last part of my message through just got blocked.

But this bit should get through, I hope:

Apple should tackle this recurring design and manufacturing scandal - they should at least have used proper solder if their design calls for soldering.

and how do you know that there are no automatic word detection systems apart from the human moderators? unless you are the one reporting all the posts with words that are not admitted then there is no way for you to be 100% sure that there is no automatic word detection system.

I'm having the same problem, my computer randomly shuts down. It comes on sometimes but everytime I'm doing even a little bit of work thats intensive, such as editing video, the computer gives up and won't turn on for days at a time. It just turns on and has a blank white screen. No idea what to do.

Sorry to tell you but it seems like you have the same problem with the logic board.  I already installed new memory, SSD Harddrive and last step was logic board due to the issue with the graphic card problem that we all face.  My machine is not even 2 yrs old yet and had to send it to depot for $310

Call Apple and file a report for the issue, make them schedule you a visit to an Apple Genius appointment and let them run all the tests and once they detect that a logic board replacement is required don't pay for it, explain to them that this is a factory design flaw on this models and there is no way you are going to get the same logic board again cause its already proven that this doesn't fix the issue as to a lot of us replacing the logic board only made the issue fixed for a couple of months until we had the issue again.

Its important for you to do the first steps cause if you are lucky you might end up with a new MBP for free as some on this forum have reported, if you don't then keep insisting with Apple support online or on the phone until they find you a solution.

Regards!! and the best of lucks buddy!

As a frustrated Macbook pro owner I also feel the need to vent on this issue.  Started having the problem on my Macbook pro 17inch that I purchase on March 2012.  First indication that something was going wrong was the fan started to turn on loud for a long period of time.  Especially if I was watching videos on my NAS drive.  Then the blue screen starting showing up and system would freeze.  Booting up was a hit or miss and sometimes I had to boot to disk utility run a repair and then reboot.  Now I know I didn't have a hard drive problem but at that time it seem the only way to get my machine working..I then figured it was a corrupt OS so I took the opportunity to upgrade to Yosemite.  So let me layout the rest of my events

    - Downloaded Yosemite but when trying to install it would say corrupt download.  Delete download and reinstall

    - At restart machine would not boot.  Had to try several times

    - I then figured it might have to do with memory for blue screen that I kept getting so upgraded to new memory

    - Machine booted fine and then tried to reinstall Yosemite but received same error message on corrupt download

    - Figured I would run disk utility on boot.  After initial scan report came back that the drive could not be repair backup data and replace drive

    - I then downloaded Yosemite again but created bootable USB drive

    - Backed up all the data to external NAS

    - Replace with new SSD drive

    - Format and installed Yosemite

    - Installed all my applications and restored my backup data

    - Just when I was opening up Photoshop (I figured photoshop had higher demand on graphic card so triggered error)

    - Took to apple store.  After testing and confirming drive and memory is good and trying to boot of Network drive for their diagnostic system would not boot.  They confirmed it was a graphic card error.

    - Paid $310 for new logic board and sent to depot.

I also took the time to tell tech about this thread and a known common problem and he said well for all the mac sold this amount of problems is relative low in percentage.  That was such an apple tech thing to say yet I have a machine that is under 2 yrs old and already replaced hard drive and also memory just to try to fix and now I paid for a logic board all within a weeks time.  I could have brought 3 or 4 windows machine with all that I have paid so far for this computer and upgrades

I tried this and no luck.  I even told them to read this long thread of frustrated users and nothing.  When it was all said and done I had to pay for logic board.  Very frustrated

Especially as no human would mistake a word representing something for the something itself, for example confusing the word "chair" with a chair, or closer to the great surrealist painter Magritte, confusing the picture of a pipe with a real pipe!

I think that the problem with iMac was in the gpu, so Apple was compensated by AMD; the current problem seems to be Apple's fault, and it cannot be solved by a simple logic board swap...
