Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB memory

I'm on the Second replacement Logic Board installed by Apple this week and problems they diagnosed which instigated their decision to replace the logic board in the first place persists with both replacements. Called the store and was instructed to swing by first thing in the morning to take a look.

Everyone Should UNINSTALL Flash Player ASAP to avoid further degredation of the Macbook Pro hardware.

    That is ********.

It is sold as suitable for graphic intensive tasks and gaming, which is most 3D now and stresses your videocard even more.

    http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/performance-retina/

If a system is advised beeing suitable for all in the link above it must surely be able to withstand playing some flash videos.

If even that let's it crash...

The problem is the design and production process like thermal paste, bad lead free soldering soldering process etc... NOT FLASH. !!!

here goes the link requester again...

why don't you post (or should I say, repost?) your 2 different questionnaires since you're here to help, instead?

Why don't you let people answer for themselves. Who do you think that you are?

You seem only to want to try and control this thread, it seems as if you are following some agenda.

What is that you want, and why do you keep trying to stop other posters from answering questions. what are you in this for?

    this same sentence again?

    come on...

we been through this before, went nowhere, ****** everybody off and it's polluting this thread.

you keep asking people to provide proofs in form of links, who do YOU think you are?

you previously said you posted 2 different questionnaires for people here so it helps you investigating this whole situation, sounds like help to me, could you please post the link to this useful post or re-post these?

if that's not too much to ask, that goes without saying.

I might be wrong but I think this is the Apple press release for the Early 2011 Macbook Pro:

    https://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/02/24Apple-Updates-MacBook-Pro-with-Next-G eneration-Processors-Graphics-Thunderbolt-I-O-Technology.html

It says that it has "AMD Radeon HD graphics processors with up to 1GB of video memory for high performance gaming, pro video editing and graphics intensive applications."

So it should be able to handle a bit of flash.

Yes, the top model in that line-up was pretty good (by 2011 standards) as a gaming machine.

But this thread includes 13" and 15" MBP's, MB's and iMacs ranging from 2008 to 2012, so why single out one particular 13" model?

It mentions all models of the early 2011 MBP.  The thread title is '2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card'.

"Starting at $1,199 the new 13-inch MacBook Pro offers amazing value and performance in a compact design. The highly portable 13-inch MacBook Pro features Intel Core i5 and Core i7 dual-core processors up to 2.7 GHz and Intel HD Graphics 3000. The powerful 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models feature quad-core Core i7 processors up to 2.3 GHz and AMD Radeon HD graphics processors with up to 1GB of video memory for high performance gaming, pro video editing and graphics intensive applications. "

Mostly it shows how random this thread has become, 2008 models are mentioned here, 2012 models also, 13" models (which don't even have the discrete graphics card) as are iMacs and Macbooks. Various causes are ascribed by various posters, for some it's software, CC maybe, or Yosemite, but wait, Yosemite cured it for some posters so maybe it's not that. Maybe it's Mavericks but it looks more like hardware, but actual proof is hard to find.

You pin it down for us then.

between me looking for your posts through a 648 pages long thread and you, simply re-posting two files from your computer, which one is lazy?

you question my presence here (while there is no reason to justify myself to you on this point), I own a defective macbook pro, 15", from 2011 and as I found valuable help in here, I try to give some back if I can.

    simple, really.

never tried to keep anyone from answering you, btw.

if I ever did, in similar fashion, please provide a link and I will recognize I was wrong.

except complaining about how this thread is polluted and how random it supposedly has become, since you don't even own a 15" or 17" 2011 mbp but a 13" and you're getting on everybody's nerves on the regular, I could question yours, but I won't.

obviously, it's not about gathering info nor investigating about anything related to the increasing numbers of these failing computers we bought.

now have a nice day, enough bothering people for today, many thanks to you.
