Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

The genius also confirmed they are aware of this problem, though if you talk to apple support they will deny this issue, this thread and any talk of class action suits.

    Good luck.

    They are worse then politicians.

    Denying everything...

BasementJack - I can see we think along similar lines. I have never, ever, become involved in an On-Line discussion concerning Apple Products, but this case on 2011 MacBook Pros has really irritated me. I know one always takes a chance when one buys something, but until very recently I was alwayy happy with what I bought from the Apple Camp. As a University Prof, since ~1985, I would bet that I have bought way more than 75 Apple computers for myself and for those with whom I work and/or employ - in fact the number might easily be more than 100 (not a bean-counter by nature, but a lot of money). I buy them because they work for me/us, and generally always have, but I must admit my level of delusion has grown in recent years. I am a scientist - I just want to do Science, and generally, Apple products have allowed me to do what I wish to do with minimal "screwing around". I find myself in a quandary - what to do? I do not really want to change, but I have also worked with various Unix boxes (Sun Sparc, others, and Linux of various flavors (or, flavours, for the anglophiles). My current feeling verges on a sense of Disrespect, for someone who has invested in Apple product long before the recent iPhone, iPod mania. It may be just time to shut the door, but I currently dislike this prospect, even if I am open to it. In my opinion, Disrespect is one of the WORST things a company can do to a (Long Faithful) Client

I am quite Pragmatic - if Apple will give me something (not peanuts) for my clearly defective products, I will "Stay on the ship", which I like, and at 55 yrs old, really do not want to change, even though I could quite easily... We shall see.

Best wishes, from a somewhat unhappy long time Apple Client (since 1985, when I was a post-doc at Caltech, many yrs ago)

I have an early 2011 macbook pro and I have the same issue, I can't start my macbook pro anymore, problem got worse over time.

Today I took my macbook pro to official apple store in Istanbul, Genius bar staff told me that logic board needs to be replaced without running any diagnostics whatsoever. It looks like repair will cost me $525 (taxes included), don't know if it is a sound investment, since a refurbished 11 inch macbook air costs almost $700 in the United States.

I asked what will happen if GPU fails again and I told him I've read so many cases where changing logic board didn't fix the issue , and he told me that if it happens within 90 days, they will replace the logic board again for free. He also told me not to believe in everything I read in the forums:)

My "Genius" also mentioned if it keeps on failing and they can't fix the issue, turkish apple stores will never replace problematic macbooks, unless there is a recall program.

So it doesn't look like there is a standard international procedure. I also don't understand how changing logic board costs $525 in turkey and $300 in USA. I am so disappointed in apple, I don't know where to begin.

Unfortunately my early MacBook Pro 2011 15" with an i7 2.0ghz processor and AMD Radeon 6490m also has a faulty GPU.. My screen regularly turns blue and then it scrambles. I hope Apple comes with a repair program since almost 30.000 people signed a petition regarding this petition.. I'm a graphics designer and bought this laptop to work on, unfortunately I almost can't anymore

To all the new people here:

    1. Call Apple Support and have them send in a report to the higher level enginerring team - this is probably the best thing to do

    2. Submit feedback with the Apple feedback form

I will not rest till Apple does something about this.

I guess one year from now it will be the same thing for the 2012 MBP. I must be one of the first to have the same problem on a 2012 model (hot country + lots of gaming, probably).

But the thing is the 2012 hardware doesn't differ much from the 2011 one, so we could reach a whole lot of new people if we drop the 2011 exclusivity here, more appealing for Apple to do something.

I have early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" with an i7 2.0 GHz processor and AMD Radeon 6490m 250 MB discrete graphics card. I am facing the same graphics problem. Even I can't install newer version of OS due to this graphics issue. When I try to install new OS when it restarts it get still showing a blue screen. Then, I have to restart by force and start up from the existing OS. My display is always showing horizontal blank lines. Few days ago my display has become reddish. And from the last 2-3 days it has also started to blinkering and showing pink colour in the web pages in the browser.

Is there anyone know whether Apple is going to help or not?

I never though that Apple could behave like this. I always saw them as the only company that is caring for its customers. But i have never been so wrong. They don't care about us. I can't even work now because i am constantly monitoring the temps and fan speeds and thinking that my machine is next. This is not a great experience. I don't know how much it has but when the time comes it costs 540 euros to get it fixed. I don't have that money. I made huge efforts when i bought this machine. This is really sad but this will be the last Apple device i purchase.

My macbook pro is also suffering the same fate as you all are. I don't think there is anything else left to say about this issue (seeing as there are over 653 pages and over 2.2 million views).

My life revolves around my laptop, I have the ability to do many things with it and in the society that we live in today, our computing devices are what we need to survive. Apple uses computers to make computers therefore making millions each year and paying its employees. Thinking of this issue on a global scale where just about every country that, is or isn't 'developed' there is one thing in common... they all rely on computers to complete transactions, store data, students create and submit assignments, researching on the internet, make vital communication with important people, apply for jobs, look for jobs, research a career path, buy and sell goods, the list is ENDLESS.

So not only is my life on my laptop but the lives of millions in todays society are dependent on computers. If a company that prides itself on its innovative technology cannot step up to the plate and compensate for the loss of opportunity that is has created then it should cease to exist, just like a doctor who prescribes faulty medication should be axed from practice.

Anyway here are the specs of my Macbook Pro 15'' (early 2011)

Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

    OSX Yosemite version 10.10

Hashyb -- as a fellow sufferer I sympathise (and empathise). if you haven't already, see <rennyz27> 3 posts before yours.

Every little bit of extra weight we can bring to bear will make a resolution more likely I believe. We must all resist the temptation towards acquiescence and apathy, which is what this deafening silence from Apple is designed to bring about I'm sure

I am having exactly the same problem with lines across the screen and frozen system. I did manage to recreate the problem by opening the Photo Booth application.

My Macbook Pro is 15" early 2011 with OS 10.10.1

I've found an independent guy in Germany who will replace the graphics chip and resolder the whole thing with lead for about €100 with a one year guarantee. No idea if this will do the trick but right now, I am pretty much desperate! Have to write my thesis and while my aforementioned Siemens laptop is the Rocky Balboa of of notebooks, I don't know how well he will handle 100+ pages on word including graphics etc.

If the chip thing doesn't work, I may take my MBP to the Apple store, smash the POS with a hammer and post a video of it for your enjoyment.

    Greetings,

It is due to the nature of the flaw, that the "victims" start showing up now massively. More will turn out of the woodwork. This evil MBP will break down when the warranty has expired...

    Regards,
