Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Add yet another to the list of people affected by this issue. I could usually reboot and continue, but now the darn thing won't boot.  Have an appointment later today with Apple to see what they have to say.  Right now it's a pretty expensive paper weight.  Any advice on how to get the "genius" to make it right?

Macbook pro early 2011 15" with same issue here. Just older than three years and looking to other pictures with the splitted screen and now not even booting anymore, it's probably the same malfunctioning GPU.. This is really bad!

Read all the forum, petitions etc last days. Apple is losing me as loyal costumer more and more..

Caro Demogorgos - "Flaw" is the key word here, apparently not accepted, yet, by those who count (i.e, not impoverished Users). "Flaw" is also important because it implies the currently offered (non) solution is totally unacceptable. I am not interested in a new motherboard with the same FLAW - want a real solution.  Hope springs eternal....

But I do not know how much hope I have available/remaining, or even if I waste my time writing. However, since I just finished lunch, I can waste a few moments chilling before returning to real work. I'm verging more towards disgust and disillusion at this point in time.

Can you provide a link or something, so i can find him? I don't want to wait any longer for a solution by apple.

    Hi All,

I just got my late MBP back from Apple today after being able to get the new logic board under the 6 year UK consumer law. If you can believe it the bill I would of had to pay would of been £822.00 pounds. I will keep you updated to how things go. At the moment I have been on it for 3 hours and it seems fine.

Apparently, the gentle folks from Cupertino will delete all sorts of links. Just go to Ebay Germany and type in Macbook Pro Logikboard Grafikchip and a couple of offers will pop up.

Good News ! ...Unfortunately as ALL the logic boards for this model have the same flaw built in so it will be pot luck if it survives or not.

for info / comparison  I have just got a quote in London to replace the logic board (this would be the third one in my early 2011 US MBP) from an Apple Service centre of 550 UK pounds (inc taxes)

Unfortunately this thread now includes 2011 (13 and 145 inch models), 2012 (13 inch), 2011 iMacs and at least one 2008 15" model.

So which one are you talking about? (if it is not the one in the thread title)

Interesting...  after leaving my machine (mid-2011 MBP 17) off for a couple of days, I turned it on and managed to log in before it fell into a crash loop.

On logging in, I got a dialog saying that a graphics problem was detected, would I like to report it to apple (I clicked "report to apple").

The interesting thing (to me) is that I had installed the latest 10.10.2 beta when it came out and I'm wondering if this dialog is representative of Apple actually "doing something"...

Has anybody else seen this dialog with an older version of Mac OS?

    I just joined the party.

Early 2011 MBP has been shipped off for flat rate depot repair at my cost.

I was able to get a backup by plugging in an external monitor and booting into safe mode. The machine was really crawling though and iStat showed gpu and cores all going into red temperature. I fired up SMC Fan control just to get through the backup.

I've pitched in on the feedback too.
