Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

May very well be hardware related but I'm convinced Yosemite made it worse. If so there may be a bunch of new failures on the way.

I love my 17" Macbook Pro which Apple abandoned, I haven't contacted Apple yet so I guess my only option is to call. It's 120 miles to the nearest Apple stored they can't fix it anyway, has to go to a depot repair facility. *****!!

Apple really should respond to this issue.

It affects only the higher end macbook pros with dual GPU's, so primarily its going to be apples higher end users and customers who are hit with this issue.

The machines otherwise are great and the last of a generation where the user can replace parts. I'd prefer to be using one of my two 2011 macbook pro's if only for the fact that the user can replace the dvd drive with a second hard drive, which was very useful for me. Instead I bought a new macbook, and keep the other two for backup, so that I have a machine to work with when I run shows, since the 2011 GPU issue renders them undependable for critical use.

I'm an apple supporter since OS7 and the mac classic. I'd rather not switch.

Apple has the cash on hand to take care of this issue.

Respond to your power users, please.

    > Your claim (under the UK's Sale of Goods Act) is not against Apple, it is against the retailer (which may also be Apple depending on where you bought it)

That's indeed true. It was originally bought from Apple on the web, so my claim is against Apple in that capacity, rather than them as the manufacturer. It's just luck that they are one and the same

    Hal,

have you tried running any benchmarks on your machine to see how the numbers stack up?

I just had a phone conversation with Simon K., (Customer Relations EMEA, Apple Inc., on behalf of Apple Distribution International) from Ireland and he told me that it's an unknown issue for Apple and there is not any replacement program at this moment. he called costumers with the same problem to get as much informations he can and report it.

Must be a colleague of Margaret L., Executive Relations EMEIA who told me Apple does not care about European consumer laws, and to hire a lawyer if I don't agree. She basically told me to move to Windows if I don't like Apple. The Cork office is pretty useless from a service point of view.

Now surely that must be the first sound bit of advice from Apple on this topic ...well done Margaret !

IF you are lucky enough to be in the UK and get no joy stating UK consumer law simply fill out a form and pay 35 pounds to take them to the small claims court....  No lawyer needed ....On the down side I guess UK consumer protection laws are partly why Apple charges such a huge premium for their kit in the UK

In The Netherlands the procedure is more expensive, and I have yet to find a lawyer interested in a case like this..

Simon was very polite in our discussion on the phone and he mention that he will be very happy to open my case again if i need it.

My mbp is in the premium reseller service in Thessaloniki, Greece and i'm waiting for a call to let me know about the issue and what can we do but i'm pretty sure they will ask me to buy a new logic board and pay around 700 euros. i'm not sure if i will do that, knowing that soon or later the issue will come again. I can't afford to buy a new logic board right now and also with 700-1000 euros you can find an used mbp 13" in good condition.

I sent also today an email to Tim Cook again and asking for a solution.

If i dont get any response or any solution, i will visit our family lawyer and ask him about the EU consumer law and how can we act about it.

Not exactly. The UK law (the Sale of Goods Act) places the responsibility on the retailer rather than the manufacturer. You can only take Apple to the small claims court if you bought the item from an Apple Store. If you bought it from another vendor you can take them to the small claims court instead.

I'm just adding to the thread here. My Late 2012 MacBook Pro is the latest to fall victim to this issue. Apple is not treating us, their customers very well! I don't think I;ll be purchasing another MacBook. I'll get this one fixed just so I can use it - It is useless to me know. I can do anything with it, it crashes connately and even when it works the graphic distortions are so bad that I can't do any work on it. The "Apple Care" representative that I spoke to doesn't know anything about this issue - So i educated him and told him to look up this thread, as well as directed him to various on line resources. More so, the Apple Store "Genius" I spoke to knew that this was an issue and basically told me; too bad. WOW! Apple, right now, YOU SUCK!

    Hello.

I have the same problems. Early 2011 MacBook Pro 17 i7 2.3. AMD Radeon HD 6750M. It happened a week ago. I did not hear about these problems until now. You should be more vocal. This thread has made some waves, but not enough. This is convenient for Apple. The only thing they care about is their image. So let's make their life a living he-ll. Post each of you distorted screen images, movies with Mac booting, post on Fb, Instgrm, YTube, Twtr. 10,000 pictures and movies with the same problem will probably get someone's attention. And if not, post more next week. Label them with #Apple #Apple MacBook Pro with graphics card problems, #3 years old MacBook Pro, #Apple stability, #Apple durability. Give Like and Share for all the articles you find. I will email including McrSoft. Who knows, maybe they will take revenge for the blue screen.

Well till now, it seems that they just don't care about this issue and only care about the money.

It only gets better folks... The intel 3000 seems to be dying on me too now.

I still can boot into a scrambled (integrated intel chip) screen, but of course this is no use. My MBP late 2011 is as of now officially a very expensive overrated paperweight.
