Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I chose Apple because the gray screen of death is more stylish than the Windows blue screen.

I dropped off my early 2011 MBPro at the Apple store yesterday. The AppleCare expired a few months ago but I was smart enough to buy the computer on my American Express card, which extends the warranty by one more year. Apple says they'll need it for 2-3 days and will get back to me.

I tried to mention to the Genius about the widely reported graphics issues with this model and he got very defensive. I was a little bit shocked. I wanted to mention this 600+ page thread on the Apple support communities but he didn't let me get  word out. It makes me wonder if they've been instructed to deny all issues.

well if Apple doesn't care, they should stop mention about 100% customer satisfaction in their keynote events.

    Hi everyone,

As many of you have already shared, my computer is a 2011 Macbook Pro 15" 2ghz with an annoying grafics card problem.

It began to fail about a year ago, obviously with the warranty already expired. Nowadays, after three repairs, the computer still has the initial problem (This is understandable when is a design problem and you only change one piece but keeping that desing).

So I join all of you in the hope that Apple starts that replacement program we need.

    I'll be waiting for news

My 2011 Macbook Pro has also become unusable due to the same symptoms everyone here is describing. I've exhausted the "graphics card" work-arounds and now it won't even get past the startup screen without the display messing up. I'm halfway through my senior year of college and I don't have the money to pay for a logic board replacement, much less a new computer.

I'm thinking of "reflowing" the logic board with a heat gun or an oven, does anyone know whether or not this would void any sort of "replacement program" possibility that Apple might eventually start? I've heard that reflowing is often a temporary solution, but I can't afford to not have my computer for however long it takes Apple to catch up to speed with proper customer support.

    Best wishes all.

    Hi,

been there, done that, got the t-shirt

I kept it running for weeks at a time since it failed on me bigtime for the first time on the 6th of June this year. I was on holiday at the beach and I had to go back 5 days early to get some work done. Bye vacation

Now my intel is scrambled too, so my MPB is really just a fancy paperweight at this point.

    Thanks for nothing Apple

    Greetings

    JP

    Hi Mike,

Sorry, missed your post. I read your comments, and if an important life-long customer like you gets no answer or service on an obvious flaw of Apple, it doesn't look too good for the individuals like me I'm not impoverished, but I think the price I paid is high enough to expect top quality customer service. I was wrong.

I'm frankly under impression that Apple couldn't care less about this issue and simply will wait until all this blows over.

We all here thought that we were buying a quality product, and we all got a lemon

    Kind regards,

    JP

Same issue here, Macbook Pro late 2011, discrete GPU failing.

    This is very, very disappointing.

Paid $2100 for the machine and now it is dying with less than 3 years of use. Unbelievable.

They were okay with me when I took my MBP in to have it's new logic board fitted. They said that when a critical number of machines had been reported then Apple might act, but at the moment the numbers were probably not great enough. He said it could be a year or two down the line.
My nano was replaced by a recall programme even though I'd never had a problem, so I live in hope!

I am currently getting a few funny dots on my screen. I'm not sure if this is a sign that something is about to fail., or whether Yosemite is causing a few bugs... hmmm... I'm trying to work my computer hard before my warranty runs out.

I totally agree... we have to make some NOISE, then Apple might actually listen:

    1. Call Apple Support or make an appointment with an Apple Genius and have them send a report to the higher level engineering team

    2. Send in Feedback using the Feedback form, I think Apple is obligated to read the feedback they get

Crossing fingers, resorting to workarounds (which might help for a little while) and posting on forums will get us nowhere really. We need to be vocal about this, directly to Apple.

If you've already had 3 repairs and you still have problems, you should make a Genius appointment and they might replace your machine with a brand new one. There are a bunch of people on this forum who, after 3 repairs, were given brand new machines.

Are you guys having free repairs? I'd be happy if I could get one free repair...  I didn't go to the repair service guy yet but I emailed him and I was told I should expect to pay $1205 NZD to replace the logic board, or at leat pay $85 to do an assessment of what's causing the issue.
