Macbook won't start up

Macbook laptop won't start up. Screen stays grey. I hear the start uo chime and then it does nothing.

Have you tried booting in safe mode? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

If that fails, try reinstalling the OS.

Tried this can't go anywhere. Safe mode started up but the screen won't allow me to input my password to get to the main screen. All devices that were connected (ipod for charging) have been disconnected and still have frozen screen. What next?
