Weird green squares on screen

I have been having a graphics issue with my 15" MBP many months after having bought it. Upon closing my laptop and letting it sleep for hours while I sleep, I always find it having these weird large square boxes all over the screen and sometimes it freezes my screen entirely.

My first instinct was to assume it was a software related problem.

Reasons for assuming this:

  1. The error is usally remedied by restarting my computer.
  2. Sleeping in safe mode gives me no error.
  3. When the screen freezes, the on-screen mouse pointer is still responsive.
  4. The distorted, colored squares can remain in place and are not a result of dead pixels on the laptop screen. (Note the picture here: When the screen shot is placed infront of the squares, it covers them up http://i.imgur.com/ydsRY4s.jpg)

I have done PRAM resets and it usually fixes the problem for sometime. However, I have come to conclude that it is simply the restarting of the computer that fixes this problem. It can sometimes go away for weeks or months at a time and then re-inflame. Unfortunately, I have misplaced my OS boot disk so I am unable to currently try install my OS on a different partition to see if it is solely software related.

I have also read of a user who had a similar problem and they said they had to get their graphics card replaced. However, when they received the new graphics card it magically had the same problem. This would be highly coincidental (although not impossible), which makes me lean more to it being a software related problem.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Yes, I have contacted them many times. The problem being is that, in (what I call) the early stages of the issue, they would advise me to do a simple PRAM reset and that would remedy the issue. They gave some explanation as to a static charge building up on some piece of hardware. I assumed this was all that was wrong and would go about my life. Then months down the road, the same thing would happened and I would call, do the same thing and the cycle would continue. Except now, the prevalence of the issue is much higher and more frequent. I can dare say the issue is not caused because of a static charge and not remedied by a PRAM reset but merely from the actual system restart involved in resetting the PRAM.

I have ran an extended Apple Hardware Test and it exclamed that there are no troubles found. I have also installed Mac OS 10.6 on a different partition and will be testing whether or not the usual sleep cause provides the same issue.

If all else fails, I will have it sent in for repair, but I would like to fix it myself if it is software related.

Thank you both for reminding me I had or have a warranty. Without these comments, I would have never known.

All sarcasm aside, I am still curious to hear from a user that has had this happened to them, or at least something similar.

Last night, I installed OS X on a second partition and did the usual test of leaving my laptop closed to sleep over an extended period of time. Upon opening it, I had no graphical issues and it seemed to load relatively fast compared to my normal partition and user account. While this isn't definitive, it is informational and adds more evidence to have me believe my issue is software related. Also, after immediately switching back to my original partition, the error became present.

I will try the same test tonight on my original partition but with a different user account.

I'm not getting any feedback but I am going to continue updating this thread regardless in case somebody else is in a similar situation.

The problem, unfortunately, is still persisting. Here is what I have tried:

1. Creating a new partition and install a fresh copy of OS X onto it. No issues were apparent on this partition and user account.

2. Creating a new user account on the original partition. Again, no problems.

3. Running a regular and extended Apple Hardware Test. No problems founds.

4. Verifying my hard drive with Disk Utility. No problems found.

5. Backing up my entire hard drive with Time Machine onto an external hard drive, then installing a fresh copy of OS X and migrating my previous user data with Time Machine. The original problem persists.

If it is not a hardware issue, then it is my conclusion that my problem is due simply to a corrupt user profile (which I am definitely leaning towards). Hopefully, it's not my applications that are causing the problem. And hopefully, there is a way for me to install a fresh OS X copy while keeping just my software and personal data.

Well, I don't know if this is actually what was causing the problem but, for unrelated reasons, I decided to uninstall Google Chrome. I did this a few days ago and haven't since had one single graphics issue. My screen never freezes, no large, obstructing pixels, and I don't have to hard restart after letting my computer sleep while closed.

So, again, I don't know if Chrome was directly related to the problem or just triggered something else once I uninstalled it but the problem no longer persists. Just thought I'd let everyone know in case somone is having a similar problem.

Thanks.

Since you removed Chrome back in July have you experienced no further issues?

I have the latest iMac, late 2013 the top spec off the shelf version, I randomly get a green square that appears or sometimes 2 of them will appear, they move when I scroll the screen and I can take snapshots of them, I've not had a snapshot of the green ones, but I did have a snapshot of the purple ones that appeared...

I turned off hardware acceleration and that seemed to fix it for a short time, now I've had the odd green box appear.
