Calendar syncing issues

I am not using iCloud for my calendars, but I do use the calendar with Outlook on my computer. When I enter calendar information on my iPod touch (4th generation with updated OS), it appears on my desktop calendar. However, when I enter information on the Outlook calendar, it sometimes sync and sometimes doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this happens or how I can correct it?
