iTunes download times

Sometimes I find download times on iTunes are almost instantaneous. I press download and a few seconds later iTunes asks if I want to play the movie or TV episode. Then I play it. Other times it is much, much slower. Like a half hour to for an hour program. The demands on my internet are the same on both occasions. What gives?
