when i open the camera on my iphone 5, the image seems to go out of focus, then the square focus indicator blinks, but nothing happens. what do i do? something is obviously wrong, suddenly.

Besides the obvious of ensuring the lens is clean, have you reviewed the phone's manual, camera section?

thanks. i have. the sensor recognizes new focal points as displayed by the change in light leves when i attempt to change the focal point, but the camera does not actually focus. any ideas?
I'm having the same issue... camera focuses on things within 4" of the lense and everthing beyond 4" is out of focus.
In both cases, it would appear to be due to inexperience to how the new software in iOS 6 drives the camera. And even the full Official Manual is woefully scant on the important details. Rather than transcribe and maybe raise the ire of the Copyright Gestapo, may I suggest perusing David Pogue's iPhone, The Missing Manual, 6th. Ed.?
