I have tried to back up the mac to the GoFlex but keep getting this message after it attempts a back up for the first time.
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “GoFlexHome”.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/GoFlex Home Backup/XXXXXXXXX iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
Any help would be appreciated

Yes, I hope there is an answer for this mess. My seagate goflex portable no longer can be mounted by FW800 and the seagate 2 TB backup plus is going through the same issue you describe. Suddenly becomes unavailable, read only -- then ejects -- then verfies but cannot be repaifred, mounted or erased. -- on stinking Mavericks. Took the drive to work to a pre-Mavericks mac, loaded it up and reformatted it, all quite lovely. But I know for 99% certainty it will fail on Mavericks.
