do I need to give my apple password to the tech

I have been having a few problems with my macbook and have given it to the Apple service centre for repair and the guy insisted I gave him my apple ID and password. Is this normal ?

I have lots of emails and documents in my icloud that are private and contain credit card numbers on airline tickets receipt etc..... and have no way to remove these as they guy has my computer......

No. It was improper for him to ask, unless the problems you were having involved use of your credentials (e.g. iCloud services etc).

Apple actually recommends that you erase your HD, if possible, before sending a Mac in for repair:

If you are concerned about data security and your hard disk is still functioning, you should back up your important data and use the secure erase functions in Disk Utility (described below) to reformat your drive before sending in your computer for service.

Is this an official Apple technician? Did you ask why he needs it?

If the problems are not related to your AppleID, AppStore Account, iCloud Account, or iTunes Store account then I can't see any reason why the technician should need the password.

Obviously, if you are expecting him to be able to fix issues with any of the services associated with your AppleID he will need the password to access the account in order to see what may be wrong.

In this case, you'll just have to trust him not go snooping about and change the password as soon as you get the computer back. Find out what the repair centers policies are on accessing private user data.

I backed everything up on harddrive but I have an apple ID and my mail is on icloud so it is not secure....

I am in Switzerland and it is an authorised Apple dealer but the problem isn't related to my apple id ( I dont think) the mac book has been getting slower and slower and froze a few times.. I questioned why he needed it, in my basic German but he said he needs it - end of story.

I didn't want to erase my harddrive as I thought it best to ahve the volume of music etc that I would normally have on there in case that was the problem.....

I think I'll change the password and monitor things closely, I'm 95% sure he won't do anything untoward but it just felt odd that he would need it.

Thanks for the feedback both of you 🙂
