New laptop, iTunes won't install

I have tried to install latest iTunes on a new HP laptop, disabled Trend antvirus, only other software HP preloaded and MS Office + Quickbooks, no changes to any settings. Result is message that iTunes has to close and do I want to tell Microsoft. Interestingly it looks like Quick Time was not installed. I tried the FAQ solution on Apple site but still cannot install properly. Any suggestions. Thks

hi Bastia!

a broken or missing QT is the leading cause of this error message (on itunes launch), so i reckon we're on the right track.

Interestingly it looks like Quick Time was not installed. I tried the FAQ solution on Apple site but still cannot install properly.

did you get an error message when you tried to uninstall QT or repair-install itunes? if so, what did it say? include error message numbers if you're getting any.

hiya!

ok, I can always do another restore if all fails.

let's hold off on the restoring just for the moment. restoring over a fresh itunes/QT install can sometimes cause additional grumpiness.

we'll start by making sure the itunes and QT have been scraped out from the PC. then we'll try a careful staged reinstall of QT and itunes.

preliminaries

download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

run it and check to see if there's any leftover itunes or QuickTime installation configuration information on the PC. if you find any, remove it with CleanUp.

now use the complete uninstall instructions on the following document as a guide to a removal of any leftover itunes or QT program files:

Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows

now download and save fresh copies of the standalone QT and itunes installers to your hard drive. (eventually we'll run the installs from there rather than online.)

Quicktime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer

iTunes 6.0.4.2 Installer

phased reinstall

switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to any of the installs

first run the QT 7.0.4 standalone install. reboot the PC.

(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

if the QT standalone install went okay, next run the itunes 6.0.4.2 install. reboot the PC.

now try launching itunes. if you get the same error message as before, first check to see if your QuickTime is launching fine or if you're getting an error message when you try to launch it.

keep us posted.

love, b

EDIT: the very moment after writing this post, i discovered that QTfW 7.1 had been released. so that link to the standalone installer may take you to one of those instead. let's go for that one, it's got security patches in it that QT 7.0.4 doesn't have.

Hi again, given my laptop was new I deceided to check with HP to see if they knew of this problem as the laptop model is new, there suggested solution was as follows so I gave it a go, before doing a Quicktime standalone install. The HP solution worked and iTunes installed ok, so must have been a windows problem.

Thks for your help, appreciate the assistance.

"the issue might be due to some backgraound programs' interference or corrupted system files of Windows XP.

In order to resolve the issue, try kindly performing the following actions.

1. Disable all the programs from the startup.
--------------------------------------------------------
Go to Start->Run.
- Type 'msconfig' without quotes
- Click on OK.
- In the System configuration utility dialog, select the Startup tab.
- Here click disable all and click on OK.
The system will ask to restart.
Restart the system in normal mode.

2. Check for corrupted system files.
----------------------------------------------
Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

3. Reverse step 3

4. Install iTunes."
