Ableton Live + Logic Pro - with a twist

Hey all. Total noob here.

I use Ableton Live in a live situation for live looping (pretty novel idea, eh?). Anyway, I just bought Logic and I am floored by the instruments. I know that Ableton will work with Logic in rewire mode, but that Ableton won't take audio in rewire mode, so that pretty much kills the live looping aspect of things.

Could I open Ableton Live FIRST, then open Logic and use a midi keyboard to trigger sounds from Logic while being able to loop and playback loops from Ableton...all from the same audio interface (MOTU Ultralite)?

Thanks!

Mitch

Well, initial tests indicate that this is possible. While I didn't have time to do a total test at my lunch hour rehearsal, I was able to test my theory by opening Live first, then opening Logic (thereby bypassing the Rewire). I placed an EVB3 organ in a midi channel and used the same MIDI controler (Alesis Photon x25) to play the organ sound from Logic while using the dials and buttons to control Ableton Live. Live recorded audio from my Moog and Motif for looping as normal. This is great! I didn't need to have Ableton send MIDI to Logic or anything like that. One controller ran both with no additional setup.

All that I have left to do is set up an audio routing where I go from a couple audio outs on the Ultralite (whatever channels I have routed for the organ sound) back into a pair of audio ins on the Ultralite. I can then route those into Ableton for live looping capabilities. (None of this would be possible without the Cue Mix capabilities of the MOTU Ultralite.)

I think my setup took a quantum leap forward!

Exactly. It makes Live relatively useless as a Rewire slave.

Logic with a 'session' mode/screenset = Amazing

I hope they have a similiar feature in the next major version of Logic.

Your method of rerouting the audio (via audio interface) isn't a bad solution. The main problem is to send midi from Live to Logic, while running both applications on the same machine. This has been my main problem and the only way I could figure out how to solve it was by having two computers.

Right now I have one computer with Live/Reaktor and the other one with Logic. They are connected via ethernet/midi. I can trigger loops and Logics AU plug-in instruments to play clips from Live (output midi). You could do this with Logic's "touch tracks", but it's just quicker in Live. (It's also advantageous to have 2 computers because a few instruments in Reaktor can take a huge bite out of your cpu).

The next thing I wanted to do (which isn't trivial) is to be able to record/control/trigger loops in Live (in real time) by a midi controller. This is similiar to the Kid Beyond samples on the Ableton site. It tricky....you have to use some MAX/MSP type of thing to have the midi do several things with 1 push of a button. This is the part I've been stuck on for awhile.

Sorry if this post is a bit useless. I hear many people using Logic and Live together, but I never understand why it is 'useful' to do so.

good luck.

Something that I have been looking into, and also sending off emails to Apple about is this kind of a setup, which is inspired from how Keane play a live set, which uses Logic and several PBs...
They have this awesome setup, which I can't believe I didn't think of before as it's so simple, of triggering play on two systems with a wireless keyboard. That way, they have both PBs in sync, and also can run different programs on different computers starting at the same time. I think that they only use Logic, but if you have a computer with Logic on, and another with Live, the possibilities could be endless, particularly if you could have them linked with ethernet, or better, wirelessly. You could have a controller, or even two, on each system, and both would be running perfectly in sync with each other.
It's an idea that I would love to try to make work with some more powerful systems like MBPs.
You could have one or two running the basic tracks, musicians/DJs playing over the top, samples triggerable through another, another running Live with a conroller doing some Live magic, and then another one, just for the sake of it, recording the whole performance through a mixer. A lot of money involoved, but equally an awesome setup, and a great live set I would imagine!

Keane?

I run all my midi through the computer with Logic, then do the appropriate routing in the Enviornment. Also, the midi via ethernet is absolutely amazing and easy for syncing computers. I've has some friends come over and they plug into the network, load Live, plug the outs of their firewire interface in a PA and minutes later we're playing. I can be using Logic, or Live.

It's a new era for music.
