Feb 2, 2013 9:19 AM in response to nosreg86by Ralph9430,That icon indicates that you have screen rotation locked so the screen will not rotate.
This is controlled on your iPhone by going to the Home screen and double clicking the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Scroll that row to reveal the controls in the left most window part of the row. You should see the symbol there. Tap it to restore screen rotation.

Ralph's post was for iOS 6 almost 2 years ago.
Swipe up on the bottom on the screen to open Control Center.
