what do i need to connect my 2012 macbook pro to a dell ultrasharp 30 inch display? I will be purchasing the dell soon.

What inputs does the dell display have? Your Macbook pro has HDMI and thunderbolt/minidisplay port out.
i'm not sure...i haven't purchased it yet...sorry...on the website, this information is given:
DVI-D, HDMI and VGA inputs
You may need the Dual Link DVI adapter as most 30" displays need that to work correctly. Read the Manual for the display to find out.

Doesn't full digital HDMI give enough bandwidth, provided you get good enough cable?
OP, this would be the least expensive option: you only need to purchase an extra HDMI to HDMI of adequate length to get the two talking. With the other two options you need an adapter dongle too.
A male Mini DisplayPort to male (full size) DisplayPort cable, period. Been using it to connect my former 2011 Air 13" and present 15" rMBP to my Dell U2711 monitor. Vivid color at full native resolution.
