Apple Java update

I downloaded the Feb. 1 Apple Java update, but when I try to install it, the message reads that I need 10.6. Doesn't 10.8 count? Thanks.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

I think you have downloaded the Java update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. For OS X Mountain Lion, you have to download Java 7 Update 13 from Oracle site in order to make Java work.

I recommend you to not activate Java if you aren't going to use it. It has got a lot of security problems

I'm guessing you already have Java 6 installed on your iMac?

It's unclear as to whether Apple will be updating it for Lion and Mountain Lion as they did with the October update, but nothing has appeared to bring it to 6u39. When and if it does, it will appear in Software Updates and you should not have to download it from Apple Support Downloads.

And yet, after updating to the former Java 7, Mac people recommended that we get rid of it and return to Apple Java 6. I did this everything worked fine; I made the mistake of updating to the new Java 7 and again with new warnings tried to revert to Java 6 with the same Terminal directions. No go. I feel like a pawn between Apple and Oracle. I really do enjoy my Pogo games but can only play 2 or 3 now. Perhaps an Appleperson can create a similar sophisticated game site for Mac people to enjoy. We can't all be nerds. (*_*)

Java isn't Mac or Windows. It's Java. It is equally unsafe on any platform.

Apple used to create the Java Runtime Environment and the Java Development Kit for Mac, whereas all other OS developers (Microsoft) let Sun (now Oracle) develop them for their OS. Apple has decided that wasting their time developing those things is no longer beneficial and has dumped it back on Oracle. Oracle doesn't appear to be making a 32-bit version for Mac, nor are they looking at compatibility with Java version 1.6 (which Apple produced). So, at this point it is all quite a mess.

I'm not sure anybody recommends either as much as some stuff won't work with Java 7, so you need Java 6 until the people who made those games update them for Java 7. Also, when the first, recent threat was announced, it didn't affect Java 6, so people suggested going back to that.

1- Did you follow the instructions at the bottom of that page: (support.apple.com/kb/HT5559)

To re-enable the Java 7 applet plug-in

Download and re-install the Oracle Java 7 JRE from this website: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1637588.h tml.

2- There are apparently quite significant compatibility issues between Java 6 and Java 7. POGO is not the only application suffering from them. I"m working with another vendor right now trying to isolate problems in an application that used to work (and still does) which was based on Java 6. They updated their program to be based on Java 7, and it no longer works with Java 6... only with Java 7.

1. I re-installed the Java 7 JRE just to be sure - no go.

2. Then re-disabled Java SE 6 (don't know why)

Then re-re enabled Java SE 6

3. Opened Firefox and Pogo again and received an announcement:

"Do you want to run this application?

An application from the location below is requesting permission to run.

Location: www.pogo/com/ .../egpjvmtest.jsp "

I checked "Run" and the announcement appeared again - i clicked "Run" again. Pogo began to

run the game.

SUCCESS! I really don't know what happened or what Java I have but I don't care. Thanks for

all your help - it helped. I wish you luck with your Java problem.

I guess we now both wait for Apple to finalize our issues.
