Mac os x 10.6.8 with Canon MP160

Are we suppose to guess what those "things" were that you downloaded?

Did you repair permissions and restarted your computer after installing those "things?"

I have OS 10.8.3 and I was able to download from the canon website the software for the scanner and the drivers for the scanner. I did have to go with a software/driver version that was older than the 10.8.3 (I think Lion 7) but it works perfect. I was able to immidiately scan documents and email them out.

Nice one. this worked for me too actually. I was pulling my hair out over the gutenprint thing. For some reason I couldn't find the gutenprint icon once it had installed. when I searched for gutenprint in the finder only the gutenprint dmg files showed up. Whatever, it works now.
