Does anyone know of a way to supply direct DC power to a Intel 2012 iMac?

I am installing it in a sailboat and want to be as energy efficient as possible. I know I could use laptops, minis, etc, but I don't want to and I already have the iMac, 27.5" and love it. I want to use it as a navigational chart plotter, entertainment, provisioning inventory management. etc.

I am willing to void warranties and mod it if necessary. Thank you, VedderAdder.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

The iMac is not really designed to be taken apart and you have a good chance of destroying it. But, if you could get the screen off, and find a way to supply 3.3V, 5V, and 12V DC from your boat, you could remove the power supply and splice your own current wires to the 3.3, 5, and 12V leads. Maybe you could drill a hole in the back of it and run your power in that way.

This sounds risky and a huge ordeal as compared to installing a simple power inverter, but I guess you really want to mod it. I used to do such kind of things years ago with modding PCs, but I now prefer Apple products the way Apple made them.

Thanks, but my use of the term "direct" is meant to imply without using an inverter.

Bad idea, your boats supply is not very stable, use an inverter, minor changes on the DC lines in the iMac won't be tolerated.

Modern (2010 onwards) iMacs require 200w, so it will be a small inverter unless you decide to power anything else as well.

Power consumption and Heat production, 2011 iMacs.
