When I connect a Netgear GS108GE 8-port Gigabit desktop switch to my my 2TB Time Capsule, the connected computers cannot connect to the internet and after a short while the whole network (also wireless) freezes. Is this a normal problem?

Nope not at all.. but it might depend on the mode the TC is running.. if you have it in join a wireless network then your switch will fail. That is caused by the TC setting.. but it should be fine in normal routing or bridge or extend wireless mode.
Tell us what mode the TC is in.. and how the TC is plugged into the network and what is plugged into the switch.. could the switch be plugged back into itself in a loop.. that is bad. make sure nothing can loop around.
