Macbook Pro connected to Dell monitor-missing keyboard shortcuts

When I connect my MacBook Pro to an external Dell U2711 monitor, some of my keyboard shortcuts don't work. For example, the commands for screen grab, and some shortcuts I always use in my software programs (CS5). When I disconnect from the monitor, shortcuts work fine. It's a nice, big monitor and I don't want to replace it. Any advice would be helpful.
