Why won't Final Cut Pro 7 allow me to Shift, Command or Option-select items?

I am having a major problem with Final Cut Pro 7. I commonly select multiple items using the Shift (⇧), Command (⌘), or Option (⌥) keys. However, just recently it started not allowing me to select multiple items this way. What happens is either the timeline, the slug, or the canvas will play (depending on which one is selected) I didn't change anything on the computer; it just started happening. I even tried reinstalling the whole entire Final Cut Studio. However, the problem still remains. This is a real problem and really is causing major issues for me. How do I fix this!?!? I'm at a loss. I've tried everything that I could think of short of reinstalling the entire OS (which I may end up doing). Can someone help me?

Did you trash your preferences? Reinstalling FCP will not replace the preferences, and they may be corrupt.

Go to Digital Rebellion and download (free) Preference Manager and trash your preferences.

I tried the Preference Manager and no, it didn't work 😟

As a side note, I believe that the uninstaller that Digital Rebellion provides (and I used) does, in fact, delete the preferences...

Of course. DR's FCS Remover does exactly what it says on the tin. Except it does not come in a tin.

What it does is remove every vestige of any version of Final Cut Studio.

I ran it on my computer and filled the space that FCS took up by running a script which installed an animated .gif of a dancing banana several times over. Let's be honest. Video editing is a stupid hobby anyway.

I don't know if you meant to be sarcastic/joking in your manner, but if you werent't, I would seriously consider ever posting something like that again. I clearly have a problem and your answer (if you weren't joking): delete the software. Really? That's not a solution! And if you were being sarcastic/joking, you should probably make sure you put that there. 🙂

Are you seeing this behavior in any other application? Have you tried switching to another keyboard?

Here are some troubleshooting tips. Go thru them systematically and post back.

Haha. I'm not mad by any means. :) I'm just pointing out that it probably wasn't the best thing to say without some explanation. I guess I didn't make that clear! But now you know.

I am not seeing this behavior in any other applications, just FCP. I have used both the internal keyboard and an external and it has the same problem. I will test it again and also with a completely different keyboard.

I'll also try the tips and try a new account. Thanks!

Okay I tried most of the steps. Here's what the conclusion is:

I created a new user account and in the new account, it's perfectly fine. Everything works as I'd expect. I went back to my standard user account (which doesn't work) and tried deleting the preferences (using Preference Manager) and it's still broken! Thoughts?

If it works in the new user account and not in your usual account, it is a preference setting.

Run FCS preference manager in your usual acct, delete all your prefs (do not back them up), empty the trash and restart the computer.

Then the next step is to use the FCS remover app (from digital rebellion) to completely erase all elements of FCS and reinstall from the original disks. Don't forget to use software update to get you to the latest versions.
