How to turn home sharing on with just the remote app?

I upgraded our Apple (2nd gen) software and I think it reset the settings (we had lost our physical remote a long time ago). I've been able to do this before (turn homesharing on without the physical remote but for some reason I cant do it with the latest software). Thanks.
