Q: iLife 11 overwritten by migration assistant

After using migration assistant (first thing after starting the iMac)to move my data from a 10.5.8 iMac onto my new 10.8.2 iMac, I have iLife 8 instead of iLife 11. Seems I have overwritten iLife 11 (in case that was already installed).

How to update iMovie, iPhoto etc. to the latest version (without buying again). I assume iLife should be included when purchasing a new Mac ...

Thanks

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

All new Macs don't came with iLife preinstalled, but you can download iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand '11 for free on the App Store.

First, open Finder, select Applications on the sidebar and delete iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. Then, open App Store > Purchases, and accept iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand, so they will be installed on your Mac. Also, if you want, delete iWeb and iDVD, too

Don't delete iDVD or Web if you use those. They are no longer included wit iLife and there is no easy way to get then again if you delete them.

Then he can update it to a version that does work using Software Update. I have it on Mt Lion and it works just fine, although it is the updated version.

As far as I know, only iDVD 7 (version included on iLife '09 and '11) works on Mountain Lion, but not iDVD 6

If the system was upgraded to Snow Leopard and the "i" programs were also updated, as they are Free to Update/grade, then they will work with Lion/Mt Lion.

Your suggestion and follow up posts to Delete the No Longer included Apps that people have become use to using is just slightly irresponsible.

If they work they'll work. If not the OP can then Delete them. To suggest to start off deleting them isn't needed. IMHO

@Shootist007. Thank you for your solution. I will try as soon as I solved other problems; I already tried to update the apps but I cannot access the App Store (not reacting) ...

As well some other OS-near apps like Mail and Preview won't start and if I want to change security settings the Settings app won't react anymore ...

On top all the access rights mixed up again - why did I changed a (slow) running system?

@mende1: Thanks for the tip not to delete apps that are not anymore in iLife11. I assume I still could copy them from the old Leopard system ort a backup ...

Migration Assistant has messed up OS X. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and reinstall OS X, so everything will be back to normal and you won't lose any file

Ethernet will be much faster than Wi-Fi, so use it

After running all nite OS X has re-installed but unfortunately the iLife apps are still in iLfe 9 version - probably I should have deleted these apps before re-installing OSX

All othe pre installed apps like Mail (which still is not opening), Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Textedit etc. are now in recent version.
