The send button on messaging on my iPad is now greyed out for all new contacts/ mobile nos that I would like to send as from noon today. I have tried switching off using home and power off buttons at the same time but that doesn't work. Any ideas gratefully received!

Settings>Messages>Show Subject Field>Off.
It is off and still is grey but thx anyway
Are those users setup and registered to use Messages on their iOS devices? You cannot message with another cell phone - other than an iPhone. Messages works over WiFi and it only works with other iOS users that have already setup and registered their number or email address to use with the app.
You cannot reach them unless they have already registered on their own device.
