Hi Steven,

I've come across this same issue recently, I managed to fix it strangely enough by running verify/repair permissions in Disk Utility.

You might need to restart your machine into the Recovery partition to fully run this (restart your mac and press Command+R).

More info on Disk Utility can be found at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

Let me know how you get on 🙂

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings.

Triple-click the line below to select it:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services â–¹ Reveal

from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

I seem to have the same or similar problem. iMovie froze on me with two busy spinners. I've used a mac for a long time but never had a need for time machine until now. tM seems to have copied everything on my startup disk except for applications. Applications remains gray when I try to open it in any previous backup. The only thing that I see in the TM preference option window are the names of the other hard drives; Is there a chance that following your procedure will allow the recovery of iMovie or is it lost?

Thanks,

Bob
