USB device not recognized

recently when I connect my second generation iPod Touch to my computer, I am getting a "USB device not recognized" message and it is not recognized in iTunes.

iPod touch, Windows 7

I would start with

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
