Finder no longer works

I have a situation where the Finder no longer "works."

I can do many things with it, but cannot open a Finder window or display the contents of any folder (i.e. in a finder window).

Attempting to do so, "immediately" results in the spinning beach-ball effect, and "Force Quit" reporting -- "not Responding."

Relaunching clears the "not responding" but does not open or allow to open a window.

using terminal cd ~/Library/Preferences

rm com.apple.finder.plist*

Two Files get deleted.

then "sudo killall Finder" ... and the windows come back again.
