Hi I am unable to back up using my Time machine I keep receiving the message: the back up disk image is already in use. I would be grateful for suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem. Thanks

Standard issue with Lion and Mountain Lion in particular.
Just restart the TC.. ie pull the power cord out.. count to 10.. plug it back in.
But there are other methods.. occasionally you will have to restart the whole network.
If you use the older v5 utility you can disconnect all users. There are other work arounds.

Thanks for the advice while restarting the TC didn't work one of the suggestions from the troubleshooting link did i.e. ejecting the back up folder.
