Error downloading/updating iPad3 to iOS 6.1

Exactly the same issue here on my IPAD2 ios 5.1. Attempted to update to 6.1 via Wifi and it failed and put me in "recovery state with plug into itunes icon on screen"

When i start itunes (latest version - it recognizes ipad is in recovery mode and asks to update and restore (says all infomation will be lost)

I click OK as all by backups are located in the cloud

itunes starts to download ipsw file but stops anywhere between 40mb and 110mb. i have rebooted and turned off all other software - to no avail.

Switch anti-virus and firewall off and try again.

What iTunes version are you using?

The latest iTunes is 11.0.1.

i updated it yesterday through itunes. - i dont know the number but the GUI looks more apple than it used to.

i assume it is 11.01 if that is the latest.

Is there a way to download the IPSW for ipad 2 Wifi - i could then "shift" and point itunes to restore with that - then once done i could restore my settings from cloud.

Please do not assume. The version is listed:

For PC: iTunes > Help > About iTunes.

For Mac: iTunes > About iTunes.

To download IOS 6.1 you have to use iTunes with your device connected and selected, in Summary tab, click Check for Update button. After you updated, you can restore using iCloud.

i think it is safe to say that as i updated itunes yesterday 10 minutes before i attempted to update ipad to ios6.1 that it was the latest version of itunes available to PC at the time.

sorry - my assumption was that this was called 11.01 because thats what you called it - not that i was not at the latest version.

it is the most recent, latest version. i have not got access to that PC for another 12 hrs - so am hoping to have some ideas to progress the issue then.

the ios i was attempting to download via the method you mention. i was hoping to find it in a repository elsewhere so i caould point itunes at it, rather than download it through itunes - since this is failing.

If your iPad's IOS version is 5 or later

check version here: Settings > General > About > Version

You can directly update IOS using your iPad

Settings > General > Software Update

Make sure iPad is plugged in the wall power socket before you proceed.

ipad is stuck in recovery mode

ipad must be plugged into itunes

itunes sees ipad and says "ipad found in recovery mode"

itunes faills to download ios needed to fix ipad and get it out of recovery mode.

ipad was on 5.1

Then do your recovery and when it's working do the update as mention earlier.

there comes a point where one needs to refer you to the OP - every question you have asked or point you have raised can be answered or was answered by reading my original post.

again - ipad is in recovery mode.

ipad is recognised by itunes as being in recovery mode

itunes is latest version 11.01.2

itunes failes to download ipsw file required to get ipad out of recovery mode.

i have found ipsw available from external link and am downloading that now. I hope to point itunes at that file and see if i can do a manual work around.

solution found:

i googled ios 6.1 IPSW and found a site that had a "direct download" and downloaded the correct file for the ipad2

When itunes was started i held "left shift" when clicking restore - which allowed me to choose to use the downloaded ipsw file.

it passed varification and updated ipad to ios 6.1

then used itunes to restore settings from cloud.

no idea why itunes crashes during download - it did several times tonight.

but this fixed the issue
