Table Row Height: Is it Adjustable?

I can't find a way to adjust the row height of my table. I mean that I can only fit 20 rows on a landscape oriented page and they are big enough to fill with 18 pt type. Can I make the rows less tall so I can have more of them on a page? -- Matt

Matt, Dennis,

the "trick" is to uncheck "Automatically resize to fit content" and then increase the number of Rows. Pages does not allow to decrease the Row Height under a specific value, but reduces the value if you increase the number of rows. A bit confusing.

with 18pt type, I get less than 20 rows on my page – maybe because of the A4 size.

Anyway, no you cannot descrease the row height (look at Table inspector; Row Height) under a specific value (0,88 cm for me [0,35 in]).

Rogue,

Click on the Table Inspector > Table tab. Notice there's a field for row height. Highlight your table, uncheck the Automatically Resize to Fit Contents box, then change the row height setting.

I am not trying to fit 18pt type. I just used that as an indication of the size of the rows. At 0.35" the rows are a good size for kindergarten papers. I'm trying to build a business document that should have the capacity for a little bit more information on a page. -- Matt

Matt,

even with smaller font sizes you cannot decrease the row height under that value. There's no problem to increase the height, but I understood your question that you wanted to get more than 20 rows on a landscape oriented page by reducing their height.

Matt,

you could use Keynote to produce a table with more rows.

Interestingly, Keynote allows row heights smaller than 0.35". I could create a table with 30 rows (0.23") and copy and paste this table into a Pages document. Then I could add rows even in Pages (I'm now at 35 rows) but you probably need a magnifying glass to read the content of the cells.

If you copy the table and enter text, a huge size (from Keynote) is used, and you should set "Inset Margin" to 0pt at Text inspector (text tab).

Rogue,

I just tried it again, this time putting the page in landscape mode. I started with 4 columns by 20 rows. I set the paper type to A4, the row height to 0.20, and it worked perfectly.

I solved the problem and got around the minimum row height by scaling the entire document to 70% in the "Page Setup" dialogue accessible from the Pages Inspector "Document"window. Then I had to drag the right side of the reduced size table to widen it to fit the new page and I had to add four more rows. The indicated page size in Pages had become 15.71" x 12.14" , but it prints out nice or exports to .pdf at 70%. -- Matt

The only problem I see with these solutions is that Pages doesn't seem to be able to put text in a row height less than 0.35" without clipping off the bottom of the text. My solution, inelgant as it is, is still the only answer I can see that gits-er-done. I appreciate the efforts of those who are trying to help me find the answers to these perplexing questions.- Matt

Dennis,

well, I obviously didn't express it very well: you said to change the row height setting – that doesn't work for me (and Matt as I understood). I have to change the number of rows. That's what I meant with "trick".

BTW: I think this is inconsistent between Pages and Keynote - Keynote allows to change the row height to lower values while Pages does not. I'm thinking about to submit a bug report.

Matt,

it depends on your font size and you definitely have to fiddle with "Before Paragraph" and "After Paragraph" spacing and "Inset Margin" width. Try your table with Inset Margin set to "0 pt".
