File://abc crashes TextEdit
Hi,
when I type File://abc it crashes many applications, including TextEdit. That happens only on 10.8.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks.

Type File://abc where? Doesn't mean anything without the procedure.

Yes. It's a bug.
On 10.8.2, with grammar/spell checking enabled in Safari:
* Reply to my answer: file://abc
* Quote my text
* BANG! Your Safari instance hangs! (You can still quit Safari though)
Now:
* Copy and edit the above text into Notes
* BANG!
Then:
* Write an email with Apple Mail
* BANG! BANG!
* (For the fun of it: send that email with any non-Apple client to your Apple Mail friends, telling them about this file://abc bug ;))
Write a text about it?
* Use TextEdit
* BANG!
Oh, there's a Crash Report generated, nice! But wai... BANG, BANG, BANG!
I suggest you all give Apple a little feedback at
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Don't forget to mention file://abc in both Subject and text, such that they can reproduc... BANG!!!
;)
I think Apple's already aware of it. This came to light a few days ago.
Funny thing about it is that I typed it in TextEdit and, sure enough, TextEdit crashed. The truly funny thing wasn't the crash, but that selecting the crash in Console crashes Console!
So my advice is just don't play around with it at this time...

You're sure? I'd better make sure they'd know by sending tons of feedback to them ;)
Just imagine they're using their own homebrewn bugtracker software, he he :)
Yes, and I know even the cause of it: they're not catching some sort of "malformed URL" exception, doh! But setting a few "experience it yourself: It Just Works(tm)!" booby traps here and there on the net is soooo much fun ;)
Cheers
Yeah, but you can't even access the Console crash to send a bug report because selecting the TextEdit crash causes Console to crash. Not sure that it's a bug that will be squashed with 10.8.3, though...

I read on the Radar site I think that the bug exists in 10.8.3 beta, too. But that's unsurprising really, as it only appears to have come to light since 31st January.
File://abc
From Safari
Edit: What's supposed to happen? I pasted the text in and it was treated just as what it is: text. It has no code association.
File://abc
From Firefox
Edit: TextEdit however does drop like a rock. Which makes no sense at all. It's just text.
For a moment, I was thinking it might have something to do with Autosave, but it doesn't affect Lion.
My thought was that as the system tries to autosave the text, it sees File://xxx as a location which doesn't exist, causing the crash.
You have to use a capital F in file, using small f doesn't crash for me.
Right. Coming to a forum where 99.999% of people haven't heard of the issue, and then asking it in a way to try and get people to experience this is great.😢
Actually, I thought that, too. How many people type the specific trip phrase File:/// into anything? About 1 per billion?
