Also, I can't get PhotoStream to set up on the Mac at all -- it's greyed out on my iCloud options. I have purchased iPhoto, which is what the help system said was all I needed.

Feb 6, 2013 3:37 PM in response to wendy1948by randers4,You need iPhoto 11 version 9.2 or later on your Mac to sync it with Photo Stream. Open iPhoto and check iPhoto>About iPhoto to see which one you have.
If your notes and contacts aren't syncing, go to Settings>iCloud, turn each to Off, and when prompted choose Keep on My iPhone, then turn it back to On and choose Merge.

Feb 6, 2013 4:31 PM in response to randers4by wendy1948,First, I really appreciate your help!
Contacts are now showing on the Mac, but it didn't work with notes (the option to Keep on My iPhone doesn't come up with notes). Any other ideas?
I'm fairly computer-savvy, but I'm new to Mac (it's used, and was a gift), and I'm so frustrated I want to throw it out the window. When I bought iPhoto, it was in the app store in iTunes. I purchases the only iPhoto there was, so assumed it was what I needed. It turns out it's not -- I should have gone to the App Store itself and looked. Now if I want to try to get my photos, I need to spend yet another $15 I don't have and I'm still not convinced it will work.

Feb 6, 2013 5:28 PM in response to wendy1948by randers4,For Notes, if they are only on your phone I suggest you open them one by one and email them to your self so you have a backup of the text. You can then go to Settings>iCloud and turn Notes to Off, then back On. Then try creating a new note and see if it syncs properly to icloud.com and to your Mac. If so, and if turning it notes off deleted the notes from your phone, you'll have to open each email and copy and paste the text into a new Note.
My own experience with photo stream syncing photos to iPhoto is that it works great. iPhoto automatically receives new photos from photo stream, and if configured to in iPhoto settings, it also saves a copy of the images to your iPhoto library so they are backed up.
