Can I delete an item from my iPad once it is in the cloud?

I am having a devil of a time reducing items on my iPad. I am trying to shift as much as possible to the cloud in an effort to open up some space. This may be the dumbest question in the history of technology, but I am basically wondering if I can delete items (iMovie made videos, Pages documents, and pictures) once they have uploaded to iCloud? It seems like that is the whole point of a cloud but I might be way off base. Any suggestions?

If you delete any data on your iPad that you are syncing with iCloud, it will also delete it from iCloud and it will be lost. iCloud isn't designed to back up your data (except to back up your iPad if you are backing it up to iCloud), it's designed to sync your data across multiple devices.

If you want to free up space on your iPad, you can import your photos and videos to your computer (as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) then delete them, or sync less music or other media to your iPad by adjusting your itunes sync settings and syncing.
