Don't know how I did it , but my utilities folder is on my desktop instead of inside the "go" section of finder.
finder/ edit /view /go/ window/ help
Must the startup disks be inserted: disk 1, disk 2 ?

Your Utilities folder needs to be inside your Applications folder - that is the correct and default location. If it is there, it will show up in the Go section (which is not the actual location, just a shortcut path to it). So, if it was inadvertently moved to the desktop, drag it back where it should be:
Dragged it into Applications, but only a copy was moved. Utilities is still sitting on my desktop and it did not appear in Utilities. When I open Utilities the message reads: "the operation can't be completed because the item can't be found."
Do a Spotlight search for Utilities. If it shows there, just let the mouse hover over the folder until it shows the path with a yellow tooltip. See if it will open.
If and when it is moved back to its proper location, you must enter /Applications/Utilities in Go to Folder.

This didn't help either. Went spotlight, nothing opened. Same message as before.
Sorry, but I am out of ideas except for a reinstall of the OS (and probably doing an erase before that) - hopefully WZZZ has another idea.....
OK, instead do a Spolight search for "Disk Utility" or "Terminal." They both reside inside Utilities. If either comes up, the note the path.
Do a Get Info, File>Get Info, for the one on the Desktop. Do a screenshot, Cmd-Shift-4 and post it here using the Camera icon in the toolbar above.
Your two last posts are empty. If you were trying to insert screenshots, they didn't appear.
I really tried, but not anymore. Thanks for trying. I will delete my entire HD and start from scratch.
No, don't delete or erase anything. Just do a reinstall. That means simply installing again from the install DVD. It will give you new system files, while preserving settings, applications, third-party applications and users. Afterward, update using the 10.6.8 Combo update. Then see what else in Software Update comes up.
I assume you mean Disc One that came with Mac or ? Will try it tonight when home.

Yes, disc 1, the install DVD. Not the applications install disc.
What will happen to that desktop Utilities folder if it's just a reinstall? Will that get wiped?
I'm thinking it should leave it alone, since it's in the user, which shouldn't be touched by the reinstall. Once the real Utilities is back, it can just be trashed. We'll see. This whole thing is rather a mystery.
