Can I run Java 1.6 on my Mac with Lion installed? Everything I have read says that 1.7 is for Lion. The problem is that with the grading software my school district runs, Java 1.7 is not compatible. I am trying to get a friend's Macbook to run the grading program. I know that my desktop Mac running Lion will work. Where can I find which version of Java is installed on my computer so that I can mimic the same setup on his computer. Thanks in advance.
Open Terminal in the Utilities folder and enter at the prompt:
java -version
Press RETURN.
Kappy's suggestion will only tell about one version version, probably Apple's Java 6. If you go to System Preferences and find a Java icon, then you have Java 7 installed. It is possible that you have both or neither installed.
Terminal said Java 6 and there was no Java icon in System Preferences. Now to see if the Grading System will load. Guess I'll try restarting again. Thanks.
I restarted and it wouldn't pick up the grading system. Is there some cache or some other file that I need to clear? What are your suggestions? Thanks.

Open Java Preferences (found in /Applications/Utilities/)
and make sure both of the checkboxes in the lower pane are checked.
As I understand it, your grading system is application based and doesn't involve a browser plug-in, so it should not be necessary to check the box at the top of the window for that.
The Network tab is the place to empty your cache with the "Delete Files..." button.
I don't have a java preferences in the utilities folder. The grading system is run off of the district internet website. Does that complicate things?

Unfortunately Apple disabled Java 6 for Safari and has not announced plans to upgrade it for Lion / Mountain Lion users.
About the only thing I can suggest is to use Firefox and agree to ignore the warning it posts each time you access a Java based web site. The 1.6.0_37 version of Java has at least 30 unpatched vulnerabilities, so it's important to only use it with trusted web sites.
I read elsewhere that this has shut down access to all the banking web sites in Denmark for Lion and Mountain Lion users and that has prompted the government there to pressure Apple to do something about it.

mindyann doesn't have Java 7 installed so that's not needed in her case.
Sorry, but since she noted that the Java Preferences app was missing, I assumed she or her friend installed it. However, if that's missing and she wants to mimic her machine running Lion w/Java 7, then she should install the latest Java 7 update on her friend's machine: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/webnotes/install/mac/mac-jre.html

Yes, she said that java -version told her she had some version of Java 6 (probably 1.6.0_37 if she has the October update) and had no Java in System Preferences.
But I don't see anything in the reference you gave about reinstall/install Java 6, only reverting the plug-in after installing Java 7? If she never installed Java 7 then there shoud be no need to revert.
I assumed that since both machines were running Lion, her friend installed Java 7. The only solution is to reinstall thelatest Java 6 for Lion update and see if that fixes the issue.

That's part of the problem is that we've both had to assume a lot here and meanwhile the OP has run off to another thread, so I guess we'll just have to wait.

That's probably a good idea. One thing I've been wondering about is how to deal with not having the Java Preferences app now. What if you had previously used it to totally disable Java or the applet plug-in & Web Start app or 35 days go by without using it and it disables itself. Without the JP app, how do you go about re-enabling those settings? I would guess your solution would bring the JP app back long enough to enable everything before Java for OS X 2012-006 blows it away.
